Be More Objective and Reach Your Goals

April 11, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 125

When we're thinking our way through life, especially when faced with difficult and life-changing challenges, it helps if we strive to be more objective so we can plan rational steps towards realistic goals.

However it's one thing to be told that we need to be more objective and another to actually do it.

One of the greatest challenges we face when trying to be more objective is to recognize subjectivity in ourselves as it arises so that we can improve our patterns of behavior.

What is subjectivity?

Subjectivity is basically a way of thinking which from an outside perspective has no measurable basis in fact.

For example, stating that "Blue is the best color" is subjective as there isn't a universal "source of truth" on what it means for a color to be "best".

Objective statements are those which can not be questioned as they are backed by logic and reason, such as "Blue is a color" or even "Some people prefer blue."

Is subjective thinking a bad thing?

Subjective reasoning can lead to circular logic as there is no solid basis in objective reality. If you ask yourself or others subjective questions, you set yourself up for subjective answers. This pattern can quickly lead into a spiral away from reality, with threads of circular logic woven together without the supporting fiber of reality.

As such, subjectivity is generally counter productive when dealing with important issues.

How do you spot subjective thinking?

It's simple, but it does take practice. Whether you are thinking about something to yourself or discussing something with others, always try to consider your words and thoughts.

Consistently ask yourself "Can the questions I'm asking be given a direct, objective answer" and "Are the answers I'm giving to other's questions based in measurable, objective reality?".

If you answer no, then try to catch yourself, take a few breaths, and try to think of a more objective approach to the subject at hand.

Does this mean you can't have opinions, or go on gut instinct?

There are some myths surrounding objectivity. Along with the perception that objective people lack excitement or have boring personalities, it's easy to fear that being objective will destroy your ability to have an opinion or have fun.

This is thankfully untrue. Once you are accustomed to questioning your perceptions and researching the facts behind your beliefs, you will begin to adopt a set of world views that are backed by well researched and supported facts. Your "gut instinct" will not go away, instead it will also become stronger and more in tune with objective reality.

As you try to be more objective, you'll find your opinions, instincts and personality strengthening. Subsequently, if you're called upon to defend or advance your position on any subject you've mastered, you become far better equipped to leap to the challenge.

It's not difficult to be more objective, it just takes practice.

The most basic lesson you will learn is to never take something at face value; always be prepared to question and research anything you are told - without being pompous about it mind you. If you can start by taking this small step, you're well on your way towards learning to be more objective.
