Harvard Referencing a Book

March 14, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 109

Harvard Referencing is only one of many different types of referencing systems that a student and/or academic can use. Why is referencing important? It is importance because an academic essay calls upon many different authors to make certain assertions, and the hard work of these authors needs to be recognized; as the theft of ideas isn't to be taken lightly. Colleges and universities alike, have strict policies on referencing. If you do not reference at all, you could face the penalty of being removed from the institution.

Harvard referencing, or any referencing for that matter is not difficult, but like many things in life it is something that should you study. It will make your life easier. Once you take the time to master it - it becomes second nature, like riding a bike. However, if you 'wing it' your marks will suffer. If you really feel insecure about your referencing, we offer a referencing service, and will take the time to correct your referencing and will show you where you went wrong, by giving you handy tips to improve. But just like anything, be sure that your department does not have a variation of Harvard Referencing that you should follow.

Harvard referencing a book in your reference list or bibliography can be tricky as you have to watch out for multiple authors, editors, editions and how much of the book you are using. The following information is required: author, initials. Date (Year). Title of the book. (Edition, if required). Place of publication (this cannot be a country): Publishing House.

A book with one author should look like this:

Miller, A., 1949. Death of a Salesman. London:Penguin.

A common mistake many writers make is not putting a comma after the first initial of the author's name. No matter what, this comma is always there and the full-stop comes after the date. It must be noted that it is also acceptable to but brackets around the date like this: (1949).

Books with two, three, or four authors should look like this:

Koelb, C., and Noakes, S.,1988. The Comparative Perspective on Literature: Approaches to Theory and Practice. London: Cornell.

As you can see, above the second line of the reference is indented. This is good practice for Harvard Referencing, yet it must be emphasized that you should check with your intuition's specific Harvard Referencing guidelines.

Books with four or more authors should only include the first author in the list followed by et. al., which means 'and others' and looks like this:

Grace, B., et al., 1988. A History of the World. Princeton: Princeton University Press.

Books that are edited require the name to have the letters ed. after it; many writers contributed to a book of this kind, and the editor complied specialist papers into one book and sometimes writes the preface or introduction. For example:

Keene, E. ed., 1988. Natural language. Cambridge: University of Cambridge Press.

As you can see from this list, there are many similarities in each, yet it is important to carefully study your book to make sure you don't leave out any important information.
