Bid writing apprenticeships

A trained, experienced professional who is already a practitioner in the industry may be able to take you on as an apprentice. You may still be able to attend college on a part-time basis to learn the theory behind the specialism but you will receive real world industry experience from working along a professional in the sector. You will learn about how to communicate with high ranking members of companies and see first hand the complexities of running a business.

Bid writing courses

There are courses for writing bids that are setup and run by companies and training organisations. Some are short courses which you can do if you are a career changer, this helps you continue to do your existing job. There are a wide range of other types of training courses for budding bid writers, some in the evening, some at college and university.

In order to learn how to effectively write bid documents you can use reference books to help with your understanding. Training videos may also be useful to help to illustrate how you can carry out professional tendering tasks. Online forums are useful for clarification and learning but you should spend lots of time "hanging out" in online communities before you take what anyone says as fact. You need to get to know who are authorities of information and who don't really know what they are talking about. As you gain experience you will begin to learn the good from the bad. The worst thing that you can do is assimilate poor quality information into your learning.

Experience as a professional

Once you've qualified and gained the experience that you need to start practicing as a professional document writer for companies and organisations, you will be able to get a job as a bid writer. You may also choose the self employment route but you are likely to need a substantial amount of money to undertake a venture of this type so consider this before making the decision. Your target markets will be businesses that need bids writing for them. These bids will be responses to Requests For Tenders (RFPs) which are also known as Requests For Quotations (RFQ) or they will simply be applications for opportunities that you via online gateways or opportunities that you hear about via word of mouth from friends, relatives, colleagues and wok associates. As you progress as professional you will continue to gain experience.
