The Euphoria Of a Great Team Meeting Should Last More Than 3 Days

April 18, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 203

Have you ever led or attended a team building meeting and after all the exercises, games, dinners, presentations and motivational speakers had concluded, you were shocked to realize the same issues remained as you started with? You had spent a lot of time, money and resources with the intent of changing or redirecting team dynamics. Now you have found the heightened energy level leaving the meeting has dissipated in days.

Do team members really look forward to the planned event? After team leaders do an after action assessment of their event, is the return-on-investment encouraging or not? Of course the ROI is measured against the objectives contained in the team building plan. Therefore, the plan becomes the basis upon which success is measured.

In the past I have talked about the "hardwired" nature of all individuals. By that I am referring to such things as personality traits everyone is born with and perspectives we develop from the environment we were raised within.Obviously some of our hardwired inclinations are not beneficial to a group. For example, some people may have a go-it-alone perspective, or "I want the credit and recognition", and at the other end of the spectrum maybe some feel their contributions are not worthy. Some may also have the approach that, if I am not going to get the recognition for a job well done, no one will. All of these personal attributes lead to a team and organizational failure.

People project their attitudes and proclivities to people they interact with daily. Probably the most destructive personality aura's that can destroy efforts for organizational change are: selfishness and negativity. It should not be hard for a leader to spot these two attributes in a team. But, first a team leader must ask him/herself: Do I project traits that are destructive to a motivating a team such as negativity, arrogance or selfishness (and of course there are many others)? Team pride in their leader and vice versa is contagious and mandatory for a successful team. As I have said, the team leader is where a good them starts. Executive's, look at your persona first; is it projecting positive vibes?

Part of planning a successful team building meeting should be an assessment of you as a leader. If there is negativity in your persona work diligently on the positive aura projected by a "can-do" leader who is focused unselfishly on the organization and the team. People love winners, especially when they win with class and dignity. More wins are attributed to a positive attitude than a negative attitude.

Then assess each of your team members with an eye toward their relationship skills. The focus becomes; no bad apples in the barrel. We know the old adage about a bad apple can ruin all the good apples in the proverbial barrel. The team needs positive attitudes toward each member and the buy-in relative to what the team event is trying to accomplish.

Here are some basic questions a team leader needs to answer about the suitability of all team members:

  • How do they respond to negative news or problems that arise within the team and the teams' progress?
  • What do you feel the individual(s) thinks of their contributions to the team? e.g. pride, willingness to help others on the team, or quality of their contribution.
  • Do they bring an aura of a positive attitude to the company, team and themselves?

Bottom-line, in the dynamic team environment, the weakest link are people that project a negative vibe because we know it can impact team performance.

Take for example- the impact of bad news. This is an event that can impact a team.Handle the problem and instill pride in the team's response. Win, lose, or draw, handle it but don't let it turn into a negative. I once heard a team leader tell his team, "I can live with people taking the wrong action to solve a problem; I can't live with people taking no action, because I can always direct someone in motion, but you can't direct no action.

If after some evaluation you feel individual(s) on your team are imbuing a certain degree of negativity to the team then there are options. First, the simplest simplest, yet somewhat disruptive, is to replace the team member(s); or, secondly, get some career coaching help for the member(s) that will give them life changing tools to change their attitude and perspective. Hopefully, it is simply a matter of people not realizing the negative forces they are projecting.

Once the dynamics of the team are in alignment then you are ready to execute a team building exercise with a high probability of lasting results. So, the euphoria of a great team building event should last because the team is first about a strong desire to work together on a personal level. A good team leader will constantly reinforce the positive and watch for the negative forces that will always creep back into any group...after all staying positive requires constant vigilance at an individual and group level.

A team divided against itself cannot stand-Everyone must be on the same page.
