Some Interesting Ideas to Help Teach Young Children

Your Teaching Plan

As part of your job as a teacher you have to follow a curriculum and for good reason but do not get frustrated if things start to veer away slightly. Sometimes it's fine to go with the flow as long as you feel the children are getting a lot from it. If the children are getting very enthusiastic about a subject that isn't exactly part of your current days plan, at least they are getting enthused about a subject which can be quite a challenge sometimes.

Have a Vocal System

It's a good idea to establish early on something you say which tells the students they all have to pay attention. Make it something unique such as "Let's Learn" or something equally snappy. Once they get used to it then it will help you move them from chatting mode into learning mode.

Make It Fun

When I was a student there was nothing more boring than a teacher reading word for word from a book. Instead of learning loads I tended to daydream. What worked better for me (especially when I was very young) was when the teacher incorporated fun and humor into the classroom. This needs quite a lot of experimentation to get right but try using a little humor from time to time and you may be surprise the feedback you get and how well they respond to your teachings.

Learn Their Names

It is a good idea to learn their names before you start the first class. They will see you have taken the time to learn their names and it should help start the class on better terms.

Know The Children

As a teacher you obviously have to maintain a certain distance and not get personally involved with them but on the other side of the coin you shouldn't be overly distant from them. Your school or teaching organization should have clear guidelines on this and I recommend you study these guidelines in great detail.

Your Teaching Items

This may sound a little selfish but I recommend you write your full name on any personal teaching items such as books. Unfortunately things like books can go missing quite easily so having your name on them can help prevent this from happening.

Research on the Internet

Try to set aside an hour each day to browse online and learn something about your teaching subjects and teaching in general. You should be able to pick up something new each day helping you make your life easier.

I often read teaching sites and one such resource is Childforum which is a site for teachers and parents, holding a large range of research articles. They have a mixture of publically viewable education articles as well as member only articles. It is also a good resource for preschool education - read more.
