Increase Your Touch Typing Speed With These Simple Tips

February 26, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 163

Touch typing has become an essential life skill that the earlier you master it the better you get as the years pass. But many people and that includes myself, have learnt to touch type on their own therefore lack the knowledge of basic keyboard skills needed to type faster.

This article is aimed for people like you and me that learnt to type fast after years of practice without any "real" guidance.

#Tip 1: Using all ten fingers

One of the first things that touch typing tutors teach you is how to use all ten fingers. Basically you have to place you left hand fingers on A, S, D, F and the thumb on the space bar then place your right hand fingers on L, K, J, H and the thumb on the space bar. This is the recommend finger "stance" you should use to start typing with all ten fingers.

#Tip 2: No looking

The less you look to your keyboard the faster you will type. By now you should know where are all the letters on your keyboard so try not to look to your keyboard while typing focus only on the screen. The less you look the faster you will become.

#Tip 3: Cover your hands

Getting the hook from tip number 2. In order to avoid looking while typing try to cover your hands with a piece of cardboard box. I've learnt this from Englishtype a touch typing tutor aimed for all ages. More about it later.

With your hands covered get a text from a magazine, newspaper or anything of choice and copy it. Practice like this a couple of times a week and you will notice that each time you will complete it a little faster.

#Tip 4: No Looking 2

Using the same principles from Tips 2 and 3. Cover your hands and get a printed text. The Challenge now is to type by only looking at the printed document. Try to check only after you completed typing a paragraph.

Again practice this technique a couple of times of week and try to keep a record of the typos. The goal is to get zero typos as you progress and off course increase your speed.

I like to time myself when I do this.

#Tip 5: Games

Computer games are a fun way to increase your speed. There are specific games from typing tutors there were designed specifically to help individuals increase their typing speed. But ordinary computer games also help because you need to use a determined set of keys and you can't keep looking at the keyboard otherwise you end up getting shot, crashing or losing what game you are playing. Even though most games only require you to use a determined set of keys they help you memorise their locations without looking.

#Tip 6: Tutors

Consider using a touch typing tutor. Nowadays you can find tutors for different age types. I've mentioned Englishtype earlier on and that is a good example of a software aimed for different ages. It has a junior and senior version; each version has a different set of words, texts and games.

#Tip 7: Speed Boosters

These programs help you identify your slowest keys and focus on them for more practice as well as teach you how typing combinations of letters quickly increases your speed.

That's it for now. Follow these tips and you will become a touch typist in no time.

Touch Typing is an essential life skills that must be learned as early as possible.
