The Very Expensive Panda Tea - Is It Worth Thousands Of Dollars?

April 13, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 182

Panda tea is basically green tea made with the help of the local panda community. This is a new project and the tea is being harvested for the first time at the moment.

It all started out when a gentleman called Mr. Yashi, a former teacher, decided to get down and dirty growing green tea. His plantation is in the mountains near Ya'an City in Sichuan province of China. He asked for the help of local tea farmers in the area and he collected many tonnes of Panda poo from the local pandas at Chendu and Ya'an which was used as the exclusive fertilizer for this tea. He reasons that the local pandas only eat bamboo grown in the area and their excrement is truly organic and of high nutritional value. Therefore his organic green tea reflects this high value and is priced accordingly! 50 grams of his special product will go on sale for around US$3500 and this 50 grams would produce approximately 16 cups. As you can imagine, this makes his Panda Tea the most expensive tea in the world.

He claims to have invested almost 1 million yuan (roughly US$ 159,000) to date in his project and he obviously wants to see a return on his investment, just like all entrepreneurs.

However, Mr. Yashi is not only in it for the money. He is passionate about his product and the environment and is wanting to put his very first profits toward a special environmental fund. He is also busy educating local farmers and encouraging them to step away from their convenient chemical fertilizers to use animal dung. Also he has received so much publicity that he wants to use his new celebrity status to encourage more people in his homeland to find different avenues to help improve the environment. This is a breath of 'fresh air' as when I visited China three years ago, I was overwhelmed by the pollution, especially in the larger cities (and most of China has large cities) which was a real tangible and very smelly thing.

Is his Panda tea worth the exorbitant price? We will just have to wait and see. Certainly the likes of us 'normal' people will not to queuing up for it and possibly in North America (where coffee is number one) people will be put off not only by the price but by panda excrement.
