Can You Actually Hurt Your Back by Swimming and How Osteopathy Can Help

December 28, 2011 | Comments: 0 | Views: 179

Most people believe that swimming is a great way to exercise and relieve pain. What most people don't know is that you can also damage your back when you swim. If you have experienced this then you may want to look at osteopathy as a means of help. Before that you should understand how this pain can come about.

What is swimming recommended for?

Swimming is often recommended by doctors and therapists as a means of relieving pain and back problems. The reason for this is that swimming does not have the jarring that other exercise has. Running and walking can hurt if you have pain in the lower back. Swimming is a good way to strengthen muscles without putting too much pressure on them.

How does it cause pain?

If swimming is meant to help you how is it that it can cause pain? The pain is not caused by swimming itself, but by the way you swim. If you already have back pain then your forward movements may be impaired. Not using proper stroke forms will cause pain in the back and shoulders. Many people also move their head incorrectly when they take breaths during their swim. Jerking your head backwards or to the side can cause neck strain.

Reducing the risk of swimming related pain

There are many precautions that you can take to avoid pain from swimming.

• Swimming side or back stroke instead of front stroke reduces the chance of pain. • When taking breaths keep the chin tucked in and turn your body to the side.• Wear a snorkel while swimming to eliminate the need to turn to breath. • Wear floatation devices in order to keep proper form while swimming. • Wear goggles so you do not have to employ improper head movements to rid water from the eyes.

What can osteopathy do to help?

If you already have pain from swimming then you will want to know who can help with that. Osteopathy is used by many people to help them with this kind of pain. What does an osteopath usually do?

• Show you how to swim correctly - During osteopathy training a person will be shown proper techniques to help with their swimming. As swimming is often used as a treatment they will know the proper forms you need to keep. Your osteopath will be able to teach you these forms to ensure that you do not hurt yourself further.

• Manipulation techniques - at osteopathy courses manipulation techniques will be taught. These techniques will be employed to reduce the pain and inflammation you might suffer from. The manipulation will be of the muscles as well as the spinal column since in osteopathy these are all connected.

If you are not using the correct forms during swimming you may cause more damage than good. If you want to avoid this then there are certain things you can do. Of course you may already be in pain and then an osteopath is someone who can help you.
