Home Infrared Sauna - What Is It and What Can It Do For You?

April 10, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 70

Thinking about a home infrared sauna? Far infrared (FIR) saunas are skyrocketing in popularity these days. They have distinct advantages over standard steam saunas - and some great health benefits as well.

But what exactly are they? How do they work? And what can a home infrared sauna do for you?

This article will answer those questions for you.

First of all a FIR sauna does not use rocks and steam to heat the air around you, as a traditional sauna does. Instead it uses infrared heat in the form of carbon or ceramic heat panels.

This type of heat does not heat the air but directly heats the sauna user - which means the air around you does not get so cloyingly hot as it does in a regular sauna.

Infrared heat has also been found to penetrate deeper into the skin than regular heat saunas - which helps to encourage deep detoxification of the tissues. In fact, some experts say we sweat up to 7 times more in an infrared home sauna than in a traditional model.

Most FIR saunas come with pre-made panels and walls that you can easily put together in about 30 minutes to an hour. Some people also try to buy the heaters separately and build it themselves. However this option can be tricky and you really should be an expert in construction to make sure you build it safely.

Most FIR saunas can be easily plugged into a standard electrical outlet whereas many traditional saunas need a dedicated breaker.

Some of the most popular benefits of these kinds of saunas have to do with better health. They have been used by many alternative health spas and clinics around the world for patients trying to detox from heavy metals, pesticides, PCBs and other harmful chemicals.

They are also a popular tool for weight loss, as experts say you can burn as much as 700 calories in one half-hour sauna session. Some people have even reported losing cellulite with regular sauna sessions.

Other benefits that have been reported include relief from painful conditions like arthritis, fibromyalgia and sports injuries. This is probably due to the increased circulation that a FIR sauna session can give you. The increased circulation effect would also be helpful for diabetics and other people with poor circulation problems.

Most FIR saunas are in-home saunas - but you can also get models for the outdoors (similar looking but heftier in construction) as well as portable models that you can take with you wherever you go.

So those are some of the basics on home infrared saunas. A final advantage is that because they don't get so hot, they also tend to be more relaxing and enjoyable for people.

No matter what you decide to do, make sure you check with your doctor before you make any changes to your diet, exercise or lifestyle routine - including trying out any kind of sauna.
