Preparing for the Next Natural Disaster With Freeze Dried Food

February 27, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 152

When is the next natural disaster in your area? For some locations, tornadoes and hurricanes are a yearly occurrence. The severity, then, becomes the dividing factor. But, what about areas like the Northeast section of the United States, which in 2010 and '11 saw regular heavy snowstorms and blizzards but, in 2012, has yet to see six inches of snow fall on the ground? In such places, the next severe natural disaster, one that knocks out power and water for several days, might be years down the line.

Regardless of whether natural disasters are a yearly or twice-decade occurrence where you live, creating an emergency preparedness strategy is crucial - and should never be done just days before a storm. There's no telling the depth of destruction such a storm will have, and being overly prepared, in such cases, is far better than finding yourself without sufficient water and food.

So, where do you start with your emergency preparedness plan? Consider food in the beginning stages. Items must require minimal preparation, have a long lifespan, and fulfill basic nutritional needs. To create a foundation, begin with "basic" items; grains, beans, powdered milk, oil, sugar, salt, and seeds are all recommended.

At the same time, you can't forecast a disaster's length or when help will arrive. As a result, your emergency preparedness plan should consider nutritional variety, and freeze dried food assists with this facet. Kits by Wise Food Storage, Mountain House, and Lindon Farms all offer up to a year's worth of meals for an individual. When a serving suggestion is combined with the recommended amount of water, the food rehydrates in minutes and is then ready to eat.

Because of airtight packaging in #10 cans or Mylar pouches, freeze dried food lasts up to 25 years, but the right storage conditions affect its lifespan. Light and moisture deteriorate freeze dried items, and chemicals, if kept in the same area, seep into the foods. A storage space, then, must be cool, dark, and dry, with cleaning products and other chemicals kept out. Also to avoid chemical tainting, freeze dried food should never be stored in a trashcan or liner.

Where's a good spot for storing packages of freeze dried food? Although any place fitting these requirements is ideal, closets, basements, and crawlspaces frequently meet all three. The location, as well, should remain at roughly the same temperature, fluctuating no more than 50°F to 60°F.

Consider, too, the possibility of an evacuation. Do natural disasters in your area frequently require you and other residents to leave the area? If so, opt for a portable freeze dried food solution, such as a plastic bucket holding a month's worth of meals in pouches, that can easily be grabbed along with a supply of emergency water.
