Is the Food Storage Space You Have Enough?

April 16, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 155

Have you ever seen the movie "Blast from the Past" with Christopher Walken? I'll give a quick synopsis in case you haven't. An inventor (Christopher Walken) in the 1960's has built an underground bomb shelter for him and his wife to use in the event of nuclear war. He stocked the shelter that they would be living in with about 35 years worth of home storage items... 35 years being the amount of time for the nuclear fall out to dissipate and life on Earth to begin again. A bomb scare sees the two, Christopher and his wife, lock themselves in the shelter for 35 years. There is a brief scene in the movie where Christopher's wife and son go to the food storage room. This moment leaves a pretty amazing image for me. It shows isle upon isle of food storage, 35 years worth, and the young mother going up and down the rows filling her shopping cart for the week.

Wouldn't it be neat to have enough space to set your storage up like a grocery store? The idea is fun to think about and a little overwhelming at the same time. Having your own in-home grocery store would be pretty awesome. But, how much space would you need to do it?

Some say you need a space about the size of a twin bed going floor to ceiling per person. That would hold a year's food storage for each family member in your household. I decided to go a little further than the hearsay, though, to the middle of Mormon country. Food storage has been practiced and perfected here for decades. The Utah State University extension service in their publication Food Storage in the Home says, "A 9 x 12 foot room with 10 foot ceilings will provide adequate space for a family of six to store an 18 month supply of food."

That's helpful information to go on. Now I can picture approximately what size space my family of 3 needs to dedicate to food storage. I'll probably find with experience that I will need to tweak it even further to our individual needs. We won't need to have row after row lined with groceries like in the movie I mentioned, and we probably won't need to fill a shopping cart, but having our own in home convenience store will mean peace of mind for all of us.
