Hand Water Pumps: How to Equip Yourself for Self-Sufficient Living

February 26, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 157

Creating your own food and water supply are considerable components of self-sufficient living. A food supply, however, is more dependent on the water, from growing to preparing, and as a result, a reliable source is essential. While a well to an aquifer is a common and reliable source, how do you bring the water up from that far below the surface? In this case, a water pump is an integral component of self-sufficient living.

Water pumps come in two varieties - hand-operated and motorized - and both are needed together. A motorized pump is ideal, until a source of electricity is cut off. In these instances, a hand water pump is a helpful backup.

Motorized and hand water pumps fit inside four- to six-inch diameter well casings. The two can even be placed together in the same opening. For use with deep and shallow wells, motorized water pumps can operate from a single 130-watt solar panel or DC source of electricity, such as a battery. Solar motorized pumps are not limited by direct sunlight and, as a result, can operate for days.

If, however, a solar power is insufficient for a period of time, a hand water pump turns into a necessity. Such devices bring up water at a rate of five gallons per minute and can even connect to a household plumbing system through a check valve.

Conservation across all aspects of living characterizes self-sufficiency, and water is no different. An ordinary citizen, believe it or not, goes through 110 gallons of water per day. How is that possible? Take into account the amount used every time a toilet is flushed or a load is run through a dishwasher or washing machine. The amounts used in these mundane activities build up during a 14-hour period. Although self-sufficient living involves less water and recycling supplies, hand water pumps need to bring up the necessary amount. Ask yourself after activities requiring water during the day, from drinking to washing dishes, and then determine the daily amount required from a water pump.

Living off a single water supply, however, isn't recommended in the long run. What if an emergency occurs? What if neither pumps can operate? Rather than taking a chance, have a strategy for storing water. Food-grade high-density polyethylene containers, such as water storage tanks and barrels, can hold a supply, and as long as it's kept out of the light, it's usable in the future. As you pump daily, keep in mind long-term water storage and allot a few gallons to the storage tank. Over time, this amount builds up into a sufficient emergency or backup supply.
