A Beginner's Hang Ten

April 16, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 185

Every surfer had to start somewhere. If you are just learning to surf, there are some basic things that you should know before getting out into the water for the first time.

First and foremost is acquiring the right type of surfboard. You can find some cheap surfboards out there, but be sure not to sacrifice quality for a small price tag. A bit of research can help weed out the quality boards from the poorly made ones. You can find some high quality surfboards for beginners at very good, low prices. You may also be able to find used cheap surfboards, but be sure to inspect them carefully before purchasing.

One of the best surfboards for beginners is a longboard, as its stability and buoyancy in the water will help in getting your feet wet (pun intended!) Your first surfboard should be big and thick to help stabilize you in the waves. Learning on a longer board will make you a better surfer in the long run, so don't be tempted by the cool short boards you see other surfers doing tricks on. You'll get there eventually, even using cheap surfboards.

Don't get too attached to your board, however, as it will most likely snap on you at some point. Even the best surfers can have their boards snap on them from the beating of the waves. That is why, as a beginner, you should typically try to purchase cheap surfboards. Keep the high-end purchase for when you have practiced enough and are well on your way to becoming an experienced surfer.

Safety is very important for people just learning to surf, as there are many ways that you can get hurt in the water, whether by the waves or even getting hit by your own board. This is why many surfboards for beginners have a safety nose guard to prevent dangerous impacts. Another great choice of surfboards for beginners is softboards. As the name suggests, they are softer than regular boards, which will reduce the risk of accidents from hitting your board when you wipe out. And as a beginner, you are going to wipe out. These are also cheap surfboards, so they won't break the bank.

Don't worry about the shape of your surfboard just yet, either. Many surfboards for beginners won't have the extra fins or different tail shapes, anyway. Again, you'll get to that eventually, but for the start, a basic long surfboard will do. Be sure to always wear the leash that is attached to your surfboard, and never surf alone.

Following these guidelines to picking out your board and staying safe will ensure that your first experience riding the waves will be awesome, even if you don't manage to catch the big one right away. But if you're confident enough to keep at it, and dedicate yourself to learning, you'll be an experienced surfer in no time. So what are you waiting for? Surf's up!
