The Flu Shot Vs Sunshine (Vitamin D)

February 23, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 152

Recent studies have shown that the flu shot is less effective than supplementing your vitamin D levels. Of course the study had its flaws, small sample size (about 200 children) and other problems, but it was a healthy step towards realizing our bodies are capable of taking care of themselves. The ugly truth is that there is little money in selling Vitamin D supplements because it is cheap to manufacture. Therefore, a great and flawless study will never see the money to make it happen.

Did you know that there are currently about 3,000 genes linked to Vitamin D and that women with proper vitamin D levels had smaller babies. Hmm, smaller babies = an easier, faster, and less painful delivery. That sounds nice!

It turns out those women with very low Vitamin D levels also had small babies, but the most common range between 20-30 ng/ml, had babies that were large.

Don't think that you are getting enough vitamin D because you are getting a decent amount of sun. Our ancestors were exposed all day long, likely with more of their skin exposed as well.

20-30 ng/ml is an expected range for those that do not take a supplement, but do get a decent amount of sun exposure.

Supplemental Vitamin D has a growing number of studies that support its wonderous and positive effects. Some of the studies are well designed, but we should definitely push for more research from the "miracle vitamin".

What can you do to bolster your Vitamin D Level?

Supplements -The problem with oral vitamin D supplementation is that you can overdose. This is a common worry, but is actually difficult to do. Most of the documented cases involve mistakes made by manufactures that made the dosage 10-1000x more potent than described on the bottle. Testing your level is cheap and a great way to see if what you are doing is working. Having a trustworthy holistic or wellness practitioner always helps as well.

Sun Exposure - Obviously skin cancer is a concern, but you may not be able to make Vitamin D because you go out at the wrong time of day or you live too far from the equator. We've all heard that we should wear sunscreen each time we go into the sun. Sunblock may as well be called Vitamin D block as it stops our skin from manufacturing Vitamin D. Smart sun exposure is the way to go. Fifteen minutes at lunch, going for a walk during a break, etc, are unlikely to cause the skin cancer no one wants - Melanoma. In fact, the most common spot for melanoma is on parts of the body that get NO sun exposure.

Our skin can produce more than 10000 IU's of Vitamin D in a few minutes given the right conditions. On top of that, our body will stop making Vitamin D if we have too much. End result, we can't overdose on Vitamin D by sun exposure.

10a-2p is the best time to make Vitamin D. I mentioned lunch above because you will make a large amount of vitamin D in your skin during this time with your arms and legs exposed.

Depending on the time of year and your latitude, it might be impossible for you to make any vitamin D. Below Georgia in the United States we can make Vitamin D all year, but above that state there are only certain times of the year. That window is smaller the higher north you go.

Will Vitamin D help me with XYZ condition?

There has been a lot of positive research lately. Have a knowledgeable doctor order the vitamin D test for you and review your results. He can suggest a level of supplementation to get you into the best range 40-60ng/ml. After you've supplemented or increased your sun exposure for a few months, he can retest you. The test costs $39 without insurance.

Vitamin D supplements are very inexpensive. Often they cost only about $40 a year for a quality supplement.

The upper limit suggested by the US is 2000 IU which is low when you consider the amount our skin can create in minutes. Many practitioners recommend doses in the 4-5000 IU range daily for healthy individuals and may go as high as 10000 or 50000 initially per day. I personally take 4000 IU per day.
