Is Whey Protein Good Or Bad For You?

April 26, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 209

Whey based protein supplements can be some of the most beneficial and convenient supplements to take when taking part in a fitness regimen. Whey based protein supplements are some of the highest - quality proteins available and they make up about 20% of the protein found in milk. It's especially important to take protein supplements when you become serious about fitness because it greatly helps in recovering the muscles and helping in increasing overall muscle mass. What's great about whey based protein is that is contains all of the essential amino acids, making it a complete protein source. It's also high in BCAAs, branched - chain amino acids, which help to build and maintain muscle mass.

The main benefit of whey protein is that it can help with after workout recovery and in building and maintaining muscle mass. However, a report published in 2004 in the Journal of Sports Science and Medicine noted that whey based protein has some antioxidant properties which can help in boosting your immune system. It does this through the high levels of a specific amino acid called cysteine. Cysteine helps to boost levels of glutathione, which directly supports your immune system in fighting back the bacteria and viruses that you are exposed to every day.

The Right Amount

It's important to note that anything can become damaging if taken in extreme amounts, this includes whey based protein. Since whey based protein shakes also contain calories and carbs, taking too many shakes might cause you to go over your caloric limit for the day and pack on more weight. In addition, anything above 2 - 3 scoops a day, that's about 75g of protein just from supplements, can add extra strain on your kidneys.

Things To Consider

Many people already consume a good dose of protein through meat heavy Western diets. Therefore, if you add a protein supplement to this mix and live a sedentary lifestyle, the protein supplement will be a waste. In addition, it can potentially become dangerous for people with existing kidney problems such as renal diseases or diabetes due to their kidneys being under more stress in processing the protein. While whey based protein supplements are great to take, they are essentially useless to you if you don't exercise on a daily basis. If you just want a healthy diet while living a sedentary then that can be done without the introduction of any supplements.
