Is Health Our First Priority - Or Are We Missing the Point?

April 24, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 159

Our life's priorities are whatever we spent time on whether we like them or not.

Let's say you spent long hours a day working in a job. Although you don't like it, this is still a priority because you need that job.

On the other hand you may consider things you like doing, fishing, car racing, other sports etc. They become priorities you like.

When health is an issue where lays our priority?

This is a question I often ask people and surprisingly many of them don't see it as an important priority, or it would not be their first preference of choice. When discussing this a little further it turns out they all want to be healthy without considering moving one priority ahead of others.

On our journey throughout life everything is a question of priority, in choosing one over the other is often that matters most. This is where we must think of how and why we are doing something where the outcome therefore could be crucial.

Here is an example of one of my own personal experiences: Some years ago I come off a ladder causing lots of damage to my left ankle. The damage was extensive, my joints and ligaments which connect one bone to one other were badly damaged, as well as muscles and tendons, also the wedge bone under the heel was fractured in two places.

A discussion between doctors took place and concluded an operation was necessary as soon as possible. They assured me I would never be able to walk properly or without a limp and having constant pain. Therefore an operation was the only option. They suggested settling and stabilising me over night and commencing with the operation first thing the next morning.

I was asked if I had any questions. Yes I had, and my question was: Is there any guaranty to walk again normal without pain after the operation? The "answer" was: we hope so and think it would be ok but we can't give a 100 percent guaranty. - So there you have it!

What would have been your decision as a patient at this point of time?

After thinking about this for a few minutes I made my decision. I decided against the operation and told the doctors I will let nature take its course. They wished me good luck and walked away with disappointed faces.

I took only a minimal amount of painkillers after the accident and I have not seen any doctors nor have I taken any script medicine over all the years.

I am happy to say my ankle is back to normal, by continuing my exercise and changing my supplementation some six years ago. The pain when walking the first few steps after sitting for a while has dissipated. The swelling and the colourful vane going up inside my leg has also disappeared.

Health has been my number one priority and still is. Looking at all options, making a decision and seeing it through has solved several of my health issues over time.

No one can argue that putting priorities in its right perspective and being prepared to make decisions doesn't pay dividend. It will determine the ultimate outcome.
