About the International Fish Oil Standard

February 29, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 153

The international fish oil standard (IFOS) program is in place so that consumers can have a more accurate idea of what supplement producers are adhering to the highest possible standards of safety and quality. Just as more and more consumers are learning about the incredible health benefits that Omega 3 fatty acids, which are most abundantly found in quality supplements, are they are also learning about the dangers of heavy metal poisoning that eating fish and fish-derived products may inadvertently expose them to.

The international fish oil standard program is not compulsive. What that means is that no producer of the supplements is forced, under pain of punishment, to adhere to them.

But the IFOS are globally recognized and transparently published. This allows producers who are adhering to high standards to show forth themselves in a way that consumers know is transcendent of mere marketing claims, and is verified by an objective third-party. The free market can "punish" those producers who won't adhere to the standards by letting producers who do to take business away from them, perhaps to the point where their companies have to fold.

What Is the International Fish Oil Standard Certification?

The international fish oil standard certification of purity and concentration has been established by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN). The IFOS needs to be understood as distinct from the Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and ISO 9000 certifications. Although these recognize when a producer follows high quality manufacturing protocols each and every time, supplement producers that have the IFOS certification on their products should be given the first consideration whenever you are shopping for these products. The IFOS is about quality of the end product, not just adherence to high quality manufacturing procedures.

Producers of supplements have to adhere to stringent submission standards if they want to receive the IFOS certification. At least 85% of all batches of product need to be submitted for lab analysis for them to receive the labelling. If that doesn't happen, then they need to produce a Certificate of Analysis for all of the missing batches, and the COA needs to demonstrate that they've adhered to the IFOS strictures.

But the fact of the matter is that all of the top quality supplement producers submit 100% of their batches for IFOS scrutiny. They've got nothing to hide, and they know that transparency and certification will actually help them sell more product.

The Great Importance of the International Oil Standard

Each nation that allows the sale of fish oil supplements has its own body overlooking standards of quality and purity. But, the international standard is recognized world-wide. This means that if one nation is somewhat careless or differs from others in its interpretation of "safe" levels of heavy metals or what is "high quality", when you see the IFOS label you can rest assured that a transcendent, globally recognized standard of quality and safety has been adhered to. You don't need to try second guessing a particular country's own regulatory body's analysis.

When a supplement is analysed by the International Fish Oil Standard body, things like any added flavourings, sufficient purging of nitrogen, the oil's sources, and the bottling process are all looked at, for all of these factors play a role in determining the quality and safety of the end product. This is why it's so important for you, as a consumer, to refuse to buy any fish oil that doesn't have the IFOS labelling.
