A Brief Look at ADHD Supplements and How They Measure Up To ADHD Prescription Medication

April 26, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 193

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) affects millions and millions of children all around the world. In fact, the number of children being diagnosed with ADHD has been climbing steadily. Some experts attribute this to improved screening procedures, but there are also many who feel that modern day guidelines make it far too easy for a child to be diagnosed with this disorder.

In the not too distant past, a child had to exhibit signs of hyperactivity, inattentiveness, and impulsivity in order to diagnosed and subsequently treated for ADHD. In most European countries, this is still more often than not the case, but in the United States, hyperactivity alone can see a child as young as six years old being put on stimulant medication. These drugs have literally been the drugs of choice for decades already, and as a result, many people, including health care professionals, have become complacent with regards to the risks involved.

Many pediatricians and child psychiatrists argue that the benefits of these drugs far outweigh the risks, but I can assure you, countless parents don't agree, and why should they, considering that they have lost their children as a direct result of these drugs. The most commonly prescribed ADHD drug has been linked to numerous child suicides and teen suicides. Even one ADHD drug related suicide is, in my books, one suicide to many.

Prescription drugs for ADHD are not nearly as mild as what some people would have you believe. To begin with, the United States Drug Enforcement Agency has these drugs listed in the same category as opium, morphine, cocaine, and etc. If a teen is caught selling his medication to friends, which coincidentally happens all too often, they can be, and almost certainly will be, charged for selling narcotics.

Something else which should set one's alarm bells ringing, is the fact that the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) requires the manufacturers of these drugs to include a "Black Box Warning" on all packaging and accompanying literature. In case you are not yet aware of it, the "Black Box Warning" is the FDA's most serious warning, and is primarily reserved for cases where there's a significant risk of addiction and other serious/potentially fatal side effects.

Admittedly, a parent can see a difference in their child's behavior almost within a few minutes after having taken their medication, whereas ADHD supplements take considerably longer to produce results. Having said that, supplements don't put a child's life at risk and neither are they addictive.

Lastly but not least, children who are treated with natural remedies can often be weaned off their supplements, after which they will no longer have a need for any type of treatment. Prescription drugs on the other hand, offer no such possibilities.

Over the years, V K Rajagopalan has seen scores of children with ADHD, all coming from different backgrounds, being treated with drugs like Ritalin, and today he believes these drugs do more harm than good.
