Tips to Lower Stress

So many people today are overworked, overwhelmed and overstressed! Learning how to manage stress is important to your overall health and well-being. Chronic stress has reached epidemic proportions and can lead to anxiety, depression, insomnia, weight gain, headaches, food cravings, skin breakouts, sickness and other ailments.

If you employ the following tips to lower stress, you can learn to cope with stress more successfully. Ultimately it all comes down to identifying the origin of your stress, finding ways to counteract the stress and making your personal de-stress activities part of your regular routine.

1. Make a list of what stresses you out and begin to take control.

The key to managing stress is to first identify what your stressors are. The different types of stress an individual may experience include physical stress, chemical stress and emotional stress. The most common is emotional stress which includes work, family, relationships, illness, death of a loved one or anxiety about life in general.

According to the American Psychological Association, more than half of all women say they are highly stressed. This is an increase of 25 percent from four years ago. Some women have become addicted to a stressful lifestyle believing that stress is synonymous with success. For others, it's a moral issue if they aren't pushing themselves at warp speed.

This is when stress becomes a steady state of being. Learning to cope with emotional stress can be difficult but it is definitely possible if you are willing to try.

2. Once you have identified your stressors, think positively and relax.

The power of positive thinking can put you back on track towards happiness and a stress-free life. It is essential that you find ways to counteract the stress in your life. Begin by taking small steps to relax and gain back control. Don't give up your power to anyone. Learn to say "no" when asked to do something that you have no time for.

Set priorities and do those that are most important to you and your family. Find time for your self and to reflect on your day, meditate, read a book or just close your eyes for a few minutes and space out. You will get just as much euphoria from taking control of your life as you got from stress itself but without the spike in the stress hormone cortisol.

3. Find your own personal activities to dial down stress.

There are as many ways to relax and lower stress as there are reasons for the stress. The goal is to identify what works for you and will leave you feeling less stressed, recharged and ready to go. Sometimes talking to a trusted friend or family member about your stress and trying to work on solutions together is helpful. Or you may find a hobby you truly enjoy and take time daily or weekly to indulge yourself and escape from the usual stressful routine of daily life.

Stress can also be managed through meditation and deep breathing exercises that encourage focused relaxation to make the body less sensitive to stress. Breathing deeply enables the lungs to fully expand for a better exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide which releases tension and creates a calming effect throughout the mind and entire body.

Anything that allows you to separate yourself from your thoughts to help you relax is the key. Give these tips a try and dial down stress in your life starting today!
