Tips for an Effective Spiritual Retreat

July 24, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 226

Spiritual retreats are not a new concept. People have always experienced the need to temporarily move away from their normal life to go on an inner journey. Jesus went on a forty-day retreat in the desert. Moses retreated in Mount Sinai. Buddhists have the tradition of going on an annual retreat. Plus, most of their time, they're immersed in meditation sessions. These are just some examples of different kinds of retreats people have done over the years but surely, there are lots more.

Going on a spiritual retreat means taking a step back from your ordinary life to let yourself experience some tranquility. You might be stepping away from your usual responsibilities like work, your children, a bad emotional condition, or you probably just want some alone time to ponder on life's mysteries.

One step back, two steps forward. The purpose of spiritual retreats is to take you away from the rush of your busy life so that when you resume your normal lifestyle, you will feel invigorated and will be able to accomplish more. Sometimes, people also use it to find clarity and understanding in their relationships. In general, the intention of people going on these spiritual retreats is to rediscover themselves in a sense that will help them grow in happiness.

Tips for an Effective Retreat

Here are some tips for a great and effective weekend retreat.

1. Detach yourself from the outside world.

As much as possible, avoid using your mobile phones and other similar gadgets in a spiritual retreat center. If possible, do not bring them with you at all. You go on a retreat to be alone and away from the normal happenings in your life so using these devices will just defeat the purpose of the spiritual retreat.

2. When you are in a facilitated group retreat, trust the itinerary.

You may sometimes feel uncomfortable with the tasks you are being told to do and doubt if it is effective for your purpose. Have faith that retreat masters or facilitators are following a time-tested format and it has probably worked for many others already.

3. Enjoy the silence.

You are probably used to the noise in your surroundings so days of silence may be out of your comfort zone. Noise contaminates your mind so just take this time to listen to your inner thoughts.

It is not true that spiritual retreats are only for religious individuals. Spirituality is not equivalent to religion. The only thing that's important is your decision to go on that inner journey. However, if you want to retreat to places of religion which are different from your own, you have to respect the faith and practices of the people in that place.

Let the power of spiritual retreat enrich you as a person. You can attend a retreat alone, or bring someone with you to make sure that your weekend retreat is truly memorable.
