How To Relieve Anxiety and Depression With Natural Supplements

April 23, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 158

I covered the relationship between anxiety and depression along with the 7 types in a previous article. Now I will discuss natural treatments that you can keep in mind. As a friendly reminder, don't forget to discuss any and all mental health issues with a qualified professional. Anything your doctor or other qualified professional tells you supersedes what you read here.

As another rule of thumb, where natural/alternative remedies can help with mild to moderate conditions, the more severe problems will usually require regular prescription medications. Here are the 7 types of anxiety and depression along with their respective natural solutions:

1. Pure Anxiety

Natural supplements include GABA, vitamin B-6, kava, and valerian. These help to naturally calm the anxiety center of the brain.

2. Pure Depression

Since depression is usually linked to deficiencies in norepinephrine and dopamine, the supplements DLPA, L-tyrosine, and SAMe help with this. These help to naturally improve mood.

3. Mixed Anxiety and Depression

For those that have this type, the combination of SAMe and GABA has been shown to be most beneficial.

4. Overfocused Anxiety/Depression

A deficiency in serotonin is usually associated with this type. St. John's wort is considered the most potent supplement at increasing serotonin availability in the brain. 5-HTP has also been shown to help with this.

5. Cyclic Anxiety/Depression

GABA, taurine, and fish oil have been shown to help with this condition. Taurine is considered an inhibitory nuerotransmitter that stimulates GABA. This ultimately leads to a calming effect on the nervous system. The omega-3 fatty acids in fish oils also help to decrease depression and improve mood.

6. Temporal Lobe Anxiety/Depression

GABA and gingko biloba have been shown to help with this type. Gingko biloba helps to increase energy, concentration, focus, and memory.

7. Unfocused Anxiety/Depression

This type can be a bit tricky considering you have low activity in the prefrontal cortex or overall brain in conjunction with high activity in the basal ganglia and deep limbic system (anxiety and mood centers of the brain). A deficiency in dopamine is usually involved. L-tyrosine, SAMe, and DLPA can help with this. Fish oil can also boost the effects of these supplements.

Also keep in mind that to pinpoint which type you may have, you would have to make a trip to visit one of Dr. Amen's clinics or another psychiatrist trained in nuclear medicine. It is my hope that you take the info from this article and use it as you see fit for your own personal situation.
