Getting Help at Work - Asking for Help Is Not a Sign of Weakness

April 17, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 159

Do you end up doing everything yourself?

How would it be if you could ask for / trust / accept the help of others?

It can be so difficult to even consider asking for someone's help when you are used to handling everything on your own. Whatever the reasons behind this, we can all benefit from a little support sometimes.

If you need to get a job done, and there simply is not enough time to meet the deadline (and, after all, you only have two hands), then consider the questions below. I suggest that you write down your answers to these questions and, where appropriate, make lists.

  1. What might happen if I do not manage to finish this task?
  2. On a scale of 1 - 10, how bad would that be?
  3. Which part, if any, could be finished tomorrow instead of today?
  4. Look at what part of the project is best for you to deal with yourself.
  5. Which parts could you ask for help with?
  6. What resources / skills / support are available to you?
  7. Once you have determined steps 1 - 6, consider who could provide some support to you today?
  8. How do you feel about having that person's help? Is he or she the right person, or are there others you could call?
  9. How can you help them to help you?
  10. Make a list of what steps you need to take to complete the project. Maybe a mental list is good enough. If not, write down the list in order of priority.
  11. Delegate and communicate clearly to your chosen support person(s).
  12. Proceed step by step; knowing the job will get done. It might not be today but it will get done.

If you let someone help you, you in fact are helping them, by showing trust in their abilities. Which means, you are helping two people.
