Keeping Your Company's Goal In Mind

June 13, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 164

Lets look at the way the mind works

Even though we are intelligent and have the ability to think of the past, present and future, most of us only think of the current action we are doing unless something we do or see triggers a memory to rise up.

If you want the strategic goal to be in their mind, you need to take the time to plan your Top of Mind strategy just like any advertising campaign would do. You will need to allocate a significant budget and assign a Business Champion to help keep the attention focused on your goals.

Make mental connections

Find out what mental connections you can anchor your strategic goal to. Is there a sound or image that will help remind employees of your goals? For example, real estate agents will ring a bell when they make a certain sale to remind all to keep making sales. I can bet that every time they hear a bell they think of selling houses.

Keep you goal front and centre

Make sure that everywhere the employees look they see reminders of the strategic goal. Instead of generic motivation posters in your offices or break rooms, spend the time and money to have your own designed specifically to raise the goals focus and build Top of Mind awareness.

Include your strategic goal in their payslip notices so that it is read every fortnight or month when they review their payslips.

Organise a public recognition of an employee that has helped achieve a goal in a major way. Everyone likes to be recognised for doing well, so start taking notice of who is working steadily towards the goal in such a way that others will admire.

Walk-by random audits

Managers can help by asking employees at different times of the day the following question.

"I noticed you are doing X, tell me which goal is this working towards?"

This will do two things, it will remind employees that they need to know your strategic goals so they can select one when audited, and secondly it will help them understand how their tasks work to the goals in the big picture.

If they answer "I don't know how this meets any goals" consider that you haven't ensured that all the organisations activities are aligned to achieve your goals, and you may need to conduct some work breakdown sessions to review current procedures for suitability.

Make sure all the workplace activities can be mapped to a strategy.

Assign a Business Champion

Select a dedicated advocate of the strategic goal and someone that has great interpersonal skills to help guide all employees actions towards the goals.

This is normally the role of an organisational culture specialist or change manager, who are trained in the way behaviours can be modified in the workplace.

It will their job to rally the employees and remind them of how their work meets the goals needed. Just like a football coach, by ensuring that any obstacles to meet the goals are removed and holding toolbox motivation sessions with employees to continually remind them what the company is working towards and how their action help.
