Water-Based Acrylic Brick Paver Sealer

April 25, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 302

Brick pavers are used to create beautiful hardscapes for homes and businesses. These range from small walkways to elaborate patios and outside entertainment areas. Pavers give a long service life and increase the value and beauty of any property. To add to the beauty and fully protect your investment, it is best to seal them with a water-based acrylic sealer.

Paver Installation

Pavers are installed over a crushed stone bed that is compacted. Then the pavers are installed. The final step is the addition of jointing sand. Sand is spread over the pavers and then vibrated into the space between the pavers. What the jointing sand does is lock them all in place. The pavers will be less likely to become misaligned and have gaps develop.

What Paver Sealers Do

Applying a paver sealer does several things. First, it seals and protects them from water, grease, oil and food stains. Second, a sealer deepens and enhances the color of brick paver. Third it penetrates and binds the jointing sand.

1. Paver Sealer Protection

Brick pavers absorb any liquid that they come in contact with. If the temperature is above freezing, water does not harm the paver. But should the temperature fall below freezing, the water inside the brick will expand and can cause the brick to flake and spall. Should oil, grease or food fall onto the brick, then they will of course leave a stain that can be difficult to remove. Water-based acrylics create a thin film on top of the brick and stop water, oil, grease and food from getting into the brick. The protective film is non-yellowing and UV resistant.

2. Color Enhancing and Sheen

Acrylic sealers will deepen the color of the brick paver. This will give a pleasing enhancement of the color. As another benefit, water-based acrylic sealers will give a wet, satin to semi-gloss sheen to the pavers.

3. Joint Sand Protection

The joint sand is one of the most important pieces of the paver system installation. Overtime the joint sand can erode and wash out from rain. The loss of sand means that the brick pavers can shift and become misaligned. For people this can become a trip hazard. Also, weeds and grass can grow in unsealed sand joints. Application of an acrylic sealer will bind the sand together and prevent the misalignment. Finally, weeds and grass cannot grow in the sand since it is protected by the sealer.

Easy Application

Water-based acrylic sealers are probably the easiest type of sealer to apply. Simply clean off any dirt, oil or anything else that you do not want to see after the sealer is applied. Roller or spray application is best and the fastest way to get a good even coat. Be sure to treat the joints well to allow enough to get into the sand and penetrate deeply. After it has had time to dry for 2-3 hours, apply a second coat. The second coat will give even more protection.

Maintaining the Sealer

Acrylic sealers need to be re-applied every two years. Surface traffic, rain and snow erode the coating. Simply clean the area to be resealed and apply again. It is that simple. Any oil or grease that gets onto the paver can be removed with a rag.

Environmentally Friendly

Water-based acrylic sealers are safe for the environment and the user. The Low VOC (volatile organic compounds) content means that they meet both the state and federal EPA laws and regulations. They have the added benefit of being low odor.
