Can Non-Native English Speakers Make Better GMAT Verbal Tutors for International Students?

April 24, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 214

It might certainly be useful to have a native speaker as a teacher for learning English because they can give you a chance to have a realistic conversation with an English speaker. Even a foreign accent is fine provided they speak properly. Accents are not an indication of poor teaching but of where a person is from

Anyways the GMAT does not test how well you do speak English (otherwise the TOEFL would not be required) but it mainly tests your analytical and logic skills.

Actually, I have been surprised to find out that several academics have recently surveyed related research studies and have determined that in fact non-native speakers usually make better English language teachers!

Their research overturned common misperceptions. What they showed was that tutors who are non-native speakers have greater insight into what language learning areas will be most challenging for their students. Furthermore they can better relate to their students and thus tend to be more empathetic.

A common problem with many GMAT Verbal tutors who are native speakers is that they often lack a deep understanding of grammar rules. They rely on a more intuitive approach to speaking which means they have sometimes trouble explaining the rationale behind things to their students. Non-native speakers on the other hand typically use a more systematic approach which is easier for their students to understand and follow.

Another issue with native speaking tutors is that they haven't experience the difficulties their students have had with mastering the GMAT Verbal and so they often rush through areas where the student needs to spend more time on. The tutor that is a non-native speaker can see things better from the student's perspective and can plan the lessons at a more appropriate pace.

For instance, I have personally mastered the GMAT verbal section so you will find me better at teaching it to non-native English speakers than many of the native English speaking GMAT teachers that you will find out there. I have studied the language intensively for many years and understand the grammar rules well, and since English is a second language for me, I understand my international students' perspective better and can give a scientific explanation why something is right or wrong. I have a broader awareness because I have been in your shoes before. This is also why I am motivated to share my insights with you.

GMAT Preparation For International Students I am not an English native speaker, however I was able to score a 780 on my first attempt on the GMAT exam; I understood that GMAT does not test your knowledge on facts or even language but challenges your comprehension and analytical skills. When you understand that success on GMAT depends on how you think and your approach to problems rather than mere memorization you will be able to overcome any obstacles. Hence I specialized in teaching these skills for non-native English speakers by developing strategies and methods for the verbal section and techniques for the quantitative section.
