Why Play Squash?

December 23, 2010 | Comments: 0 | Views: 164

Most folks do not understand what squash is or how it is played. However, for those who play racket ball, they've no doubt watched people use the same courts to play. Squash has a long time history, and it pre-dates racket ball by hundreds of years. It's played all over the world and has been for 100s and 100s of years. Long ago, it was played using the palm of the hand, later rackets were used, and today - whooorah! - those rackets are made of some of the most high-tech materials money can buy.

The sport now is played at break neck speeds. Thus, it takes agility, talent, skill, and an active mind just to track the ball, much less get to it on time, predict it's next location, or prevent it from hitting you - ouch. It's a fast moving game no-doubt and played to nine-points. Using the side walls is part of the game, but there are rules which must be followed in order to do this.

It's not a sport for wimps, and injuries are common amongst serious players. For those who love competition, and are in excellent shape, it's a fun sport. For those who are a little older and perhaps far from their prime, well, they have no business playing with anyone who is, and is skilled in the game. That's the sort of sport it is.

If you'd like to see squash played full-tilt, and a maximum rocket speed, it is an Olympic Sanctioned sport, and the players are deadly accurate and fly across the court at impossible angles to return the ball to the front board. This is one sport which is clearly not dominated by the US Olympic team, although I must say in recent years they have very much been able to hold their own, quite impressively.

Some of the US players can definitely dominate the "T" as they say, but there is a fierce competition in World Tournament and Olympic Play, and let me tell you this is not a sport for the weak, but it is a very exciting and fast-paced sport to watch. And thus, it is, as it tests the true agility of the human anatomy to the fullest. Today, there are some 50,000 squash courts in the world.

And maybe the reason you haven't noticed, is you quite frankly haven't been watching. Indeed, I hope this article has expanded your horizons and you too will become a squash fan, or if you think you can handle it, why not give it a whirl, it will blow you away - I don't care how good of shape you think you are in, 30-minutes to an hour of squash, will have you sore and tired as you've ever been in your life. Please consider all of this.
