If You Are Looking for a Lightweight Hiking Backpack, the Osprey Atmos Is For You

February 16, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 179

Lightweight backpacks have become common for backpackers and hikers alike. The appeal is realistic, as no hiker wants to carry more weight than necessary. However, sometimes you can lose great features when moving from a normal weight pack to a lightweight pack. This is not the case with the Osprey Atmos series of packs. Osprey has done its best to keep great features while giving you a lightweighT and durable pack.

The Osprey Atmos series includes four sizes of packs. Each size has different functions and features. But all Atmos packs share features, one of which is their lightweight suspension. Osprey has coined the suspension the AirSpeed system. It consists of a peripheral alloy frame that is shaped so it does not touch your back. This is covered with a tensioned mesh panel which is what is against your back. This keeps the bulk of the pack off your back allowing air to circulate between you and the pack. There are side vents to let the air in.

In addition to sharing many great features, each Atmos backpack has its own unique feature and specs.

• Atmos 65 - A pack large enough to use for multi-day hiking, this top loading pack includes a pocket in the lid, side compression straps, an adjustable harness and hip belt (with pockets), side pockets and trekking pole attachments, among other things. It is rated to carry 40 - 55 pounds.

• Atmos 50 - For overnight trips, the Atmos 50 is just what you need. It is a top loader and includes all the features of the Atmos 65. It is rated for a load of 35 - 50 pounds.

• Atmos 35 - A panel loader, this day to light overnight pack is super light and easy to use. It features dual ice axe loops, a stretchy front pocket, and can carry between 15 and 25 pounds.

• Atmos 25 - A hydration pack with room for extras, this panel loading light day pack will not weigh you down. It is rated to carry 15 - 25 pounds.

All Atmos packs are hydration compatible. They have an internal sleeve for the bladder and the tube can come out either side. They are made of durable nylon and backed by Osprey's lifetime guarantee. The workmanship is excellent and the design intuitive. While the Atmos is a men's series, women will want to check out the Aura series, which has the same features but is designed specifically for women.

For lightweight hiking the Atmos can't be beat. Check it out if you are looking to upgrade your pack.
