Aussie rules football continues to thrive as a popular team sport throughout the country. In this sport, the Australian Football League, or AFL, is the top professional competition, and the sport's governing body. Australians continue to go to AFL matches, proving the enduring fame of the game. The popularity of AFL merchandise is another proof of the game's status. Fans around the world who want to have a piece of the game's rich history collect AFL memorabilia from sports shops, especially online.

A Bit of History

Generations of football fans have followed the AFL since 1896, from the days of the Victorian Football League, when it broke away from the Victorian Football Association, the first Australian Rules football competition in the area. The founding ball clubs were Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Fitzroy, Geelong, Melbourne, St. Kilda, and South Melbourne. Before this, in 1859, a group of men wrote the first Australian rules, which have been handed down with minor changes ever since. Today the growing league's teams include the Adelaide Crows, Brisbane Lions, Fremantle Dockers, Gold Coast Suns, Western Bulldogs, West Coast Eagles, and many others.

How the Game is Played

Known as Rugby in Europe, Aussie rules football is played between two teams of 22 players each. Eighteen players for each team play on the football ground and the remaining four act as substitutes. Players can pass the ball by hand passing, kicking, or by running with the ball in hand. Hand passing means hitting it with the fist to pass to another player. If the player runs with ball in hand, he has to let the ball bounce every 15 meters. To score, a player must kick the ball in the middle of the side posts at the opponent's end. At the end of 20 minutes of four quarters, the team that scored the most wins.

AFL merchandise is available in many stores around Australia and other parts of the world where football is big. Many websites offer these items in different packages, from family run businesses to big corporations and sponsors. It is also advisable to give AFL items as gifts. Team jerseys and football jumpers are particularly popular. These jerseys are famous apparel while playing or watching Australian football. Legendary players like Coleman are common choices when shopping for AFL memorabilia. However, current stars are the major sellers, like Brendon Goddard, Lance Franklin, and Brett Deledio.

Some online stores offer these items at discounts when fans buy season tickets or in bulk. Going online exposes fans to a more extensive collection of merchandise, like authenticated gear autographed by players. Online stores sell the most number of the jerseys at the start of the football season in March, when fans wear the colours of their favourite teams.

Aussie rules football is attracting more fans and exposing them to the merchandise available to celebrate their favourite teams. Online stores present the best resource for fanatics shopping for team memorabilia, uniforms, and gift items.
