Being a Good Husband: Showing Jesus in the Home

July 11, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 135

Our home is made up of myself, our 2 boys and my wife Sam. Being the only woman at home presents challenges to my wife since the male contingency of our household tends to be a little insensitive to things in the home that really don't matter very much to us but are of utmost importance to her.

For us, family night is on Sunday evenings (unless it's football season. During football season, out of respect for the game, family night takes place on Saturday evenings... thanks honey!) Family night consists of a movie and a meal, usually chosen and prepared by the "host" for the evening's festivities. Before getting into our movie, we usually spend a few minutes talking about family issues and miscellaneous stuff that, due to our schedules, was swept under the rug during the previous week.

A few weeks ago, my wife brought up an issue that hit the male consensus of our household right between the eyes. I and the boys tend to be practical jokers. And in our joking, we sometimes gang up on Sam and make her the brunt of the joke. During the day when Sam is at work, the boys and I become blind to cat barf, misc. cups scattered all over, sinks full of dirty dishes, and mounts of laundry waiting to go into the wash. But Sam has amazing vision. The things that we spend all day at home totally oblivious to, see manages to see from the driveway as she arrives home from work. Our ongoing joke was how the nice, peaceful environment at home drastically changes when hurricane mom touches down daily at 5:25PM.

During her turn for family night, Sam told us how much we hurt her feelings by being made the brunt of the "hurricane Sam" jokes. It's amazing how clearly you see some things once they are brought to your attention. I can understand how we made Sam feel and I can understand why she felt the way she felt. So we all made our apologies and corrected our behavior.

Christ like moment - Husbands, remain approachable.

Sam told me that even though we were making her feel bad by having a bit of a laugh at her expense, she felt good about being able to come to me and express her feelings, trusting that her feelings would be validated and adjustments in our attitude would be made to honor and respect her feelings. Husbands, remain approachable. Cultivate and environment where each member of your family feels comfortable and able to talk to you about anything. Jesus was approachable. He accepts us at our worse and when we leave our encounter with Him, we leave feeling better about our interaction with Him, not worse. In remaining approachable, the lines of communication within your household remaining open and marital issues that have the potential of festering and causing huge problems in the future can be addressed before they have a chance to grow.

The goal of FaithsMessenger.Com is to share biblical principles and analogies in a clear, concise, and understandable way that can be applied to life by the average Christian. In sharing our short stories and analogies we hope that you will be able to make a real life connection between everyday life situations and the application of God's Word.
