Requirements to Becoming a Qualified Speech Pathologist

January 22, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 84

With so many industries actually downsizing, it can be rather nerve wrecking not knowing whether your position is needed. Despite this, there are some areas that have strong potential growth in the coming decade. One of these is the area of speech and language pathology which deals with helping patients with speech related problems such as stuttering and more.

Professionals in this healthcare earn on average about $70,000 per year although this figure is largely dependent on a number of factors including experience, geographic location and work setting. Speech pathologists are commonly found in hospitals and nursing care facilities although nearly half of them choose to work in schools such as elementary school.

School requirements

Of course, becoming a speech pathologist has prerequisites which need to be met before you can practice and work with patients. Different states have different requirements but a master's degree from an accredited university is a must. The material that is covered will help to prepare you for this career path and covers topics such as acoustics, psychology, communication disorders and more.

To find a school, all you need to do is simple do a search online for programs that are available in your area. You can also choose to go to an out of state university as well but it is definitely a good idea to do your research first so you know what to expect. Be sure to read up on what each university offers and whether it would be a good choice for you.

Upon graduation from a speech and language pathology program, you will also need to put in between 300 to 375 hours of supervision in a clinical setting. This will ensure that you get the necessary hands on experience so you know how to assess and treat patients. This will also give you a clear overview as to what tasks you will be expected to perform.

Another option is to attain the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech Language Pathology (CCC-LP) which actually meets some of the requirements that are set forth to become a speech therapist. Getting this certificate is a bit more intensive as it includes 400 hours of clinical supervision along with a 36 full time fellowship.

Future employment outlook

Compared to other occupations, this one is actually increasing at a rapid rate so those who prepare themselves now will be able to take advantage of the many opportunities that this field brings. So if you are interested in pursuing a career in this field then be sure to get as much information as you can about it.
