Staying Healthy and Happy With Ayurveda

February 17, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 151

For thousands of years, Ayurveda, the original health science of India, recommended panchakarma treatments on a regular basis as the key to health and happiness. Once reserved for the royal families of India, these deeply purifying rejuvenation treatments can now be enjoyed at ayurvedic spas throughout the world.

Literally, panchakarma means "the five actions" -- a routine of massage, herbal steam baths, and other measures to detoxify the body. Ayurveda holds that that eliminating impurities allows the body's channels to be open for the free flow of nature's intelligence - which also means the flow of bliss in the body. Rogers Badgett, owner of an ayurvedic spa in Fairfield, IA, observes, "There is a flow of intelligence -- a communication -- between every cell and organ in the body and this is what maintains optimal functioning of the mind and body. According to Ayurveda, true health is a state of balance that produces bliss as well as vitality. Health and happiness go hand in hand."

The effect of happiness on health is well accepted. We all know the saying, "laughter is the best medicine." Modern science has shown that emotions stimulate neuropeptides, which are immuno-modulators. These bind to receptors in the kidneys, heart, and liver - in fact, all over the body At the same time, organs have been found to produce their own neuropeptides, which bind back with the brain. The whole body can be seen as a communication network. This supports the Ayurvedic perspective that happiness is a two way street: happiness creates health and health creates happiness. One can see why the world's most ancient system of healthcare, Ayurveda, recommends regular panchakarma treatments. When toxins and impurities disrupt the natural flow of intelligence in the body -- disrupt the communication system of the body -- health and happiness are affected. Complications arise and the once-perfect mind/body system begins to suffer. Eliminate the blockages and the body once more returns to optimal health.

A full Panchakarma treatment program at an ayurveda spa usually begins with a consultation with ayurvedic experts who use the ancient technique of pulse assessment to determine body type, one's level imbalance and where the imbalances are located. Based on the assessment, an individualized panchakarma program is then created to soften and eliminate impurities and to target specific areas where blockages and toxic buildup has occurred.

Although Ayurveda offers a wide spectrum of specialized rejuvenation treatments. Most Ayurveda spa treatment programs do not isolate any one treatment modality over any others. A full week's rejuvenation treatment plan typically includes at least 6 or 7 different treatments. The various treatments are meant to work together synergistically in a holistic regimen to remove blockages to the natural flow of the body's intelligence. Where the blockage is and what quality (or dosha) is associated with the blockage determines the location and quality of symptom that is being experienced. But, according to Ayurveda, the underlying cause of the symptom is that the flow of intelligence, of bliss, or of consciousness has been blocked. This is why ayurveda spas can address a wide range of symptoms and disorders through the individualized purification and detoxification therapies of panchakarma.
