Garden of Harmony - A Swedish Spa Near Hollviken (Harmonigaarden)

February 11, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 133

Surrounded by fertile flatlands near the southwestern corner of Sweden, there is a haven of health. Newly built, this spa offers relief from hectic living and many of the aches and pains that plague modern man. Located just outside the village of Hollviken, the whitewashed complex almost glows from a distance as it rises up from wintry, grey fields near the Baltic Sea.

As we drove up and parked, anticipation filled our minds. What variety of bodily pleasures do these welcoming buildings house?

Stepping in through the front door, we were greeted by a friendly hostess and a homey atmosphere. The first room looked like a modern, Swedish living room, with a modest reception area in one corner. A small display of CDs and health foods added to the peaceful atmosphere of caring and hospitality.

We had come to an oasis of relaxation. Mid-winter's freezing bite and our workday tensions, quickly faded away.

After shedding thick coats, gloves and caps, our hostess gave us a tour of the facilities. In no time we felt right at home and headed for the dressing room. Here we eagerly removed the last of our winter attire and climbed into summery swimsuits.

Curious as little children in a new playground, we walked the short corridor to the swimming pool room. As our hostess opened the door, a wave of gentle heat graciously drew us inside. Memories of gentler climates beckoned our worn and weary bodies to melt into sun chairs by the clear water.

The long, rectangular room was just large enough to house a beautiful pool, two saunas, a few tables and a few pairs of sun chairs. One wall of the room was mostly glass and had sliding doors leading out to a lovely patio.

Despite the grey day and freezing temperatures, this outdoor area promised even more fun and relaxation. Just a few steps from the pool area was a glorious, steaming hot tub!

But first, we simply sat by the soothing, blue waters of the pool. Tensions melted away to the gentle sounds of nature and diffuse melodies playing in the background. We soon took turns unwinding even more in the nearby floating tank. Its weightless escape from worries and weariness perfectly complemented by swimming and enjoying the well-heated saunas.

Then it was time for the great outdoor experience of the hot tub; its powerful water jets well-positioned to eliminate any last residue of stress.

Gratefully sunken into this blessing of warmth and massage, we leaned back to watch the late afternoon light fade behind the shifting patches of clouds and blue sky. As our bodies were pummeled and warmed, small flakes of snow settled on our noses now and again.

This rare blend of sensations was a real treat. Warm and safe, the harsh winter could not reach us, even though we were outdoors wearing next to nothing. Such defiance-winter conquered! We laughed at the how the cruel winds could not threaten our bodily comfort. Sweet victory!

As the sky darkened, our defiant thoughts gave way to acceptance; all good things must indeed come to an end. Hoping to get home before dark, we eased ourselves out of the tub and returned to our poolside seats for our finale of refreshment.

Sad to be leaving this haven of harmony, but glad for all it had given us, we savored each sip of our vitamin-filled, strawberry smoothies.

Thus refreshed and encouraged, we leisurely collected our various toiletries and changed into full winter attire. Back in familiar clothes, we sensed how different they felt. Less heavy, less distasteful, more natural and welcoming.

Thanking our wonderful hostess, we stepped out into the frozen world left only a few hours earlier.

But now, with soothed and calmed bodies and minds, the harsh, grey Scanian winter was much less malevolent. From the place vacated by lost tensions, we knew that memories of this Garden of Harmony would ease our minds and bodies for many days to come.
