You Have To Know Your Why

February 24, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 139

Do you know the "why" behind what you do? Once we can get clear on that, the pieces just seem to naturally start falling together but being able to understand what that 'why' is often another story.

When we don't know the why, we are not as committed as we otherwise could be or should be. A sense of purpose will drive you to pursue what you need to do to accomplish your goals. It will force you to reach outside your comfort zone because your desire is greater than your doubt. You understand your actions are connected to your outcomes and you take the necessary steps to ensure the desired outcome is achieved.

Knowing the why gives you the energy and motivation to excel. It literally serves as the momentum to move us forward despite any immediate challenges or obstacles. When faced with struggles, we take them in stride, understanding these are part of the journey and must be overcome to succeed towards our goals.

Your "why" has to be something that is very personal to you and is connected to a bigger purpose that you truly believe in.If you're lacking either of these elements, the fruits of your efforts will be short-lived. You may feel temporarily energized and excited but those emotions will be fleeting and you'll soon be looking for something else to fill that void. You'll feel more like your journey is a roll coaster ride with lots of twists and turns. Your attention will be easily diverted as another bright and shiny object captures your attention and you'll sense a lack in direction and purpose..

Get clear on your "why" and make sure it's something very personal for you and you feel connected with. Understand that it's the why that is going to propel you forward in a powerful way.

Action Steps:

If you're struggling defining the why in your business, really stop and take the time to understand what that is for you. If you don't, you will have no sense or for real purpose to help ground you and you'll feel like that hamster on the wheel - you're expending lots of energy but not going nowhere. You'll eventually get frustrated and if you continue probably feel burned out over time.

Think about what led you to choose this path for a career. What resonates with you most when you think about a career in design? Where do you see this taking you? Why is that important to you? What is your bigger purpose or vision? There most certainly is one - sometimes you just have to dig a little deeper to find it. But once you do, things will start to align and the struggles will feel less significant because you have your eye on something bigger the"why" that leads you to fulfilling your purpose!
