Should You Hire at oDesk: oDesk Review

June 07, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 217

oDesk is a marketplace that brings employers and freelancers together. It is a great concept in theory - employers, mostly entrepreneurs and small businesses post their projects that they want specialized workers for but cannot afford to hire. Freelancers then bid on these projects. Everyone leaves happy.

However, the truth is, oDesk review has been harsh by many employers who were left unhappy with the site. As a result, quite a few serious businesses are looking elsewhere. The quality and pay of jobs is on the decline.

Pay your Freelancers!

However, part of the problem lies with the employers themselves. They tend to underpay the people who work with them, and there are bound to be low quality bids. Remember, you get what you pay for.

Not just at oDesk, but in any freelance marketplace, it is easy to get carried away and pay less. After all, you will find many other employers doing the same. This is self-defeating. Freelancers worth their salt will never bid on such low offers. You will lose out on good talent.

Another common misconception is that you can pay freelancers in developing countries peanuts. That isn't true because if the worker is good, she can always get a higher paying gig and wouldn't take your offer irrespective of where they live. This means you need to treat all workers fairly. It is a global marketplace and you pay for the skills of people you hire, irrespective of where they live.

Invite Freelancers to Bid

A lot of freelancers are not highly active on sites like oDesk mainly because they can find more lucrative jobs and projects elsewhere. This means even though they might have a profile there, they don't scout through the jobs board every day.

To get their attention, you should find skills that you require and invite these freelancers to bid on your projects. This way, you can improve the overall quality of bids that your project receives. Again, this ties back to the previous point that you need to pay your workers well; otherwise they won't take a second look at the job that you are offering.

Use Feedback Wisely

Feedback at oDesk is a great feature that can help employers choose the right candidates. However, you cannot take this too far - not everyone starts off their writing careers with oDesk or really any other marketplace. If, for example, you are hiring a writer who has 10 years of experience writing for magazines and is new to oDesk, you cannot treat her like a newbie really. You need to take proven experience outside of oDesk into consideration.

In the end, remember that if you treat your freelancers fairly, there is plenty of talent to be found at oDesk. Follow the above tips and you should find great candidates for the job.

From an employer perspective, you should read Comprehensive oDesk review which gives you a thorough analysis of how employers can get the best out of oDesk. If you are a freelancer, read about oDesk review from freelancer to know what works best for you.
