Evolution of Retweeting

April 15, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 134

Twitter - which is a system of micro blogging, Free Internet service in June of this year totaled more than 44.5 million users worldwide. In the vast majority of service users agreed that a limited field for entering messages is a very convenient solution for posting short messages. And this is a fact. Limited space helps them to publish the most important points on which they would like to highlight. Re-tweeting - or whatever it is called re-posting (Re-posting) other people's messages. This is a new feature added to existing ones implemented already.

Short messages have developed a Twitter as a standalone language tool. For example, using the hash character enables to do the fastest and most convenient search (eg, "# conference09"). Another common technique - is to add the "@" symbol before the name of the user (used to refer to the name publicly.) If you have noticed, these linguistic tools are also passed to other social media, including YouTube, Flickr, Facebook, and in the blogosphere.

Currently there is no set of format for Re-tweeting, in the fact the messages of other users are freely distributed, with scant attention to their creator (the one who posted first). The most common scheme for re-tweeting includes a preface to a post with the letters "RT" and then the "@" symbol, and then the user name, being in quotation marks. Re-tweeting - system relays information to new users who are subscribers of the tweeter. Thus, links and other useful information can be disseminated quickly.

Sociologist Danah Boyd from Microsoft Research recently conducted a study of such social phenomena as re-tweeting. According to her limited entry field (of 140 characters) is not very convenient mechanism for reposting. It is necessary to exclude part of the original text, which sometimes leads to some confusion and putting "RT @ username" makes not everybody happy as it takes up the most of the space. It is necessary to introduce fundamentally new solution for this.

Twitter did not make itself wait long, responded to this by announced that soon there will be a special addition - a button that allows users to automatically re-tweeting someone else. Layout of the new button has not yet appeared, so users can make comments and preferences for a new design. Most likely, the new re-tweeting button is added to the picture and the name quoted with the original text.

Boyd found that the percentage of users who cite the reports is quite small, but she hopes that number will increase after the activation of this button. In her study, Boyd found that 11 percent of re-tweets are browsing the content of comments.

Basically people who do reposting are geeks, or people who are fixated on something new. They are mainly holders of the Internet. They are very actively involved in the dissemination of new information, and in very large quantities. Boyd believes that re-tweeting-button will lead to the evolution of the social sphere, and it will be used extensively. Members will be guided by a wider audience, sharing their views and encouraging others to do the same, she says.

"Users often use re-tweeting to share interesting information with their subscribers," - said Susan Harring, professor of information theory and linguistics at Indiana University and part-time chief editor of the "Language @ Internet journal". I do not think that a new tool for Twitter is convenient for users rewetting and will not satisfy in full. But in any case, this will increase activity of those users who actually uses such feature.

Re-tweeting not only of interest to users but also important for companies and researchers who want to track how information is made available about a particular product. "Re-tweeting - it's a great viral mechanism," says Dan Zarella, web developer, who studies viral marketing in social media. "Viral marketing - a very complex phenomenon, since the dissemination of information is very difficult to control because the information is continuously distributed in a geometric progression. But now, we hope that will somehow contribute to re-tweeting our work. "

"I think that having the button and the structure of the developed Re-tweeting is definitely a good idea. But I do not agree with its implementation "- adds Dan Zarella and offers to use third-party tools such as TweetDeck or other. "Press the re-tweeting and the application will automatically copy and paste in the message prefix "RT ". It is very convenient in my opinion. "

By inserting "@" RT username" Twitter makes it impossible to search for the user "- adds to the above Zarella. Yes there is no need for it. As for the development of the resource and users for the various additional features Twitter may charge an additional fee. For example, a feature that tracks re-tweeters. The average user will not need it but for the various research institutes, it can be very useful.

Also, to show the image of the original tweeter, the new Twitter button can show the last 20 posts. "It is also necessary to introduce the possibility of adding comments to an existing old twitter. If the new feature does not allow commenting, users can simply go back to the old one"- said Steve Garfield, an adviser to several major media companies.

I predict that people will continue to re-use Twitter to meet their needs, namely the dissemination of but I cannot imagine that those who are passionately re-tweets will stop doing it.
