3 Rules Of Social Media Optimization

We all understand the importance of SEO (search engine optimization) and while it does have its place in increasing a site's performance in the search engines there is a relatively new kid on the block that deserves just as much recognition as SEO. Social Media Optimization (SMO) involves a process whereby sites are optimized to an extent that they can be easily linked to and recognized on social media sites. If you have been thinking about SMO, and you should, here are three rules that you must follow to get it right from the very start.

Know your target audience. Before you even think about starting a SMO campaign you must have your target audience clearly defined in your mind. Of course when you create a product, you want to target the whole world but this is not realistic. By trying to target everyone you might just miss the mark. Define your target market and work out a strategy to reach them. You can start by becoming a member of a community where the people you're trying to reach meet. This way you can better understand their needs and provide the type of content that addresses those needs.

Make it easy for users to link to and share your content. Write content that provide value for your target market. It should be information that they can use presented in a format that makes for good reading and sharing. Good content is too often in short supply, stand out from the crowd by giving thought to what you write and post. Another way to make it easy for users to share your content is through the use of social sharing buttons on your site. Include buttons like the Facebook Send or Like buttons, Google Plus Buttons and Retweet buttons so that users can easily share your content if they enjoyed it.

Be active. Interaction is what social media is all about so don't forget it. Any time that you invest in interacting with your community is well worth the effort since you are building awareness of your brand, spreading your message and adding value to your community. Sure you can limit your interaction and see some results but if you want to reap the real benefits of SMO and realize long term results you must participate since this is truly what social media is all about.

These are just three rules for SMO out of many. The bottom line is to keep in mind that while you can keep it impersonal with SEO and still see results SMO demands more of a time investment and a more personal effort to connect with people in order to provide value and get them to take the actions that you want. Done right, SMO will help you grow your business by building awareness of your offerings and in the end this will add significantly to your profits.
