Safety Features of Snowboard Helmets

February 08, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 189

Many snowboard resorts have mandated the usage of snowboard helmet since they have witnessed several head injuries in the recent past. These accidents have taken place not because the snowboard helmets are any less effective. This is because we often overlook the importance of selecting a right snowboarding helmet. Not only the snowboard helmets, but also other equipments such as snowboard pads are also important for ensuring your safety.

Function of a snowboard Helmet

The function of a snowboard helmet is to protect the head of the snowboarder in the event of a fall, crash or collision. It is made with hard outer plastic shell and a soft foam interior. The plastic shell absorbs some amount of shock as well as protects the body from scraping against any obstacles. The foam absorbs the force of an impact and prevents it from reaching the head. During winter seasons helmets are also helpful in keeping your head warm. Similarly, the other snowboard pads keep you safe and warm during the winter season.

Features to Look for While Buying a snowboard Helmet

If you are buying a helmet snowboard for the first time, it is a good idea to go to a local store and find about the size that fits you well. Main characteristics of a good helmet are:

* A helmet should fit you snugly. It should not feel loose neither should it feel constricting. * The chin strap should be able to give a snug fitting to the helmet * The outside noise should be audible to the rider even while wearing the helmet * The helmet should have enough vents to prevent the head from sweating

Sort through different brands of the helmet to find a helmet that meets your preferences

Will a Helmet Provide Complete Protection?

As per the observations, a helmet can offer complete protection to a snowboarder traveling at a speed of 14 mph or lesser. The increase in speed beyond this level reduces the efficiency of helmets in protecting your head in case of an accident. Users riding at an extremely high speed should not be enticed into a false sense of security just because they are wearing a helmet. This is why you should be wearing other snowboard pads too, in order to complement your protection.

Snowboarding associations always urge visitors to wear a helmet and snowboard pads but take complete care of their own safety as if they are not wearing one. This means driving in control, following safety rules, and making good judgments. Wearing a helmet is an important part of staying safe, but the ultimate control is in your own hands.
