Insomnia: The Causes and Symptoms

Insomnia is a type of sleep disorder accompanied by trouble falling asleep or staying asleep through the night. The symptoms can be short-term or long lasting. The causes are varied but some of the most common factors are poor lifestyle habits; use of certain medications or drugs; physical, social, mental or health issues. The symptoms can vary from one person to the other but some of the most common ones are listed as: trouble falling asleep on most nights, feeling tired during or falling asleep during the day, not feeling refreshed after waking up, waking up several times during sleep, having trouble concentrating. Since one of the major causes of insomnia is long-term medication, how to treat insomnia through lifestyle changes and home remedies, has been a subject of research for a long time. Several simple lifestyle changes can treat insomnia but some alternate forms of medical treatments like therapies and natural medication have proven to be quite successful in curing the disorder altogether.

How to cure insomnia through lifestyle changes and home remedies: While prescription drugs like melatonin and valerian can be expensive means of treating this disorder, some of the natural alternatives can be easily implemented and really inexpensive. Some simple lifestyle changes are: sticking to a particular sleeping schedule; staying out of bed when not sleeping; not forcing the body to fall asleep; finding ways to relax; limiting nap times; making the bed comfortable for sleeping; exercising and staying active; limiting the use of substances like caffeine, alcohol and nicotine. Sometimes, large meals just before bedtime can interfere with the digestion process and inhibit sleep. A lot of medications contain chemicals like pseudoephedrine and other stimulants that cause insomnia.

There are several effortless home remedies which, if pursued carefully can prove to be quite beneficial. Researches show that people have tried some basic substances readily available at home such as peanut butter, hot milk, bath salts etc. to successfully cure insomnia. Eating peanut butter or drinking some hot milk before bedtime helps because both of these contain tryptophan, an essential amino acid. This helps the body produce vitamin-B or niacin, which helps the body to produce serotonin. Serotonin is an extraordinary chemical which acts as a calming agent for the brain and plays a significant role in sleep.

Some special blends of tea leaves also help the brain in relaxing and induce sleep. Other concoctions like "Sleepy time extra" have elements like valerian, spearmint, catnip, West Indian lemongrass, hawthorn and orange blossoms in them. Drinking this mixture half an hour before going to sleep has been known to not only induce sleep but enhance the quality of sleep. A type of Epsom salt known as the "Pepsom Sport" can be added to a warm water bath just before bedtime and the bath can be quite relaxing. This treatment works especially well for kids. Several other alternative and natural practices such as acupuncture are also known to be beneficial for people with insomnia.
