What Are Stretch Marks and How Can You Get Rid of Them?

April 05, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 151

What causes stretch marks?

  • Rapid growth. This is specific to teenagers who go through intense physical changes during puberty. The skin elasticity cannot handle the growth process in some cases, which is why skin tears can occur, causing scaring.
  • Weight gain.Gaining weight in this case is not necessarily associated with fat deposits that make the dermis expand. Marks can occur during pregnancy, which is why they are mostly located on the abdomen. However, when the added pounds consist mostly of fat, the tears can be noticed on other parts of the body such as legs, arms, thighs and, in some cases, even on the back area.
  • Muscle gain. People who adopt a high protein diet and heavy training routines to grow muscles can experience dermis ruptures that lead to stretch marks. In these cases, the ruptures can be noticed in the areas where the muscles have expanded rapidly, not allowing the skin to extend naturally.

These are the most frequently met cases, but there are others that have to do with sudden major changes in the body size, which is why finding out how to get rid of stretch marks can be an issue for many.

How to prevent stretch marks?

Since there are not very many solutions for those who want to know how to get rid of stretch marks, most dermatologists and doctors in general advise patients try to prevent their occurrence in the first place. Here are some of the best prevention tips:

  • Avoid rapid weight gain. People who have a predisposition to gaining weight should control their diet and avoid gaining extra pounds. This needs to be done through a balanced diet and regular physical exercise. In some cases, like those of the teenagers who cannot prevent physical growth, the first signs of stretch marks should be a reason to consult a dermatologist or a medical doctor.
  • Adopt a balanced diet. Not only will this type of diet prevent weight gain, but it will bring all the necessary vitamins and minerals for healthy skin. Moreover, a diet poor in proteins can seriously affect the elasticity of the skin. This doesn't mean that the diet should be very high in protein either, because it can lead to rapid muscle gain, which is a cause of striae.
  • Avoid using steroid-based creams. It has been proven that the hydro-cortisone and corticosteroids are two major causes of stretch marks, which is why creams based on these two ingredients should not be used very often.
  • Avoid the use of steroids. Steroids are mostly used by men who want to grow muscles at a very fast pace. Unfortunately, prolonged use is not healthy and can affect the quality of the skin, causing ruptures in the dermis.
  • Apply massages and creams during pregnancy. Research has shown that pregnant women who massage their abdomen with creams rich in vitamins can reduce the appearance of stretch marks.
  • Hydrate your body and skin. A hydrated body results in a hydrated skin. Besides drinking plenty of water, the skin can be hydrated with the help of moisturizing lotions. These help it become more elastic and thus prevent striae.

In spite of all these prevention methods, stretch marks can still occur. This is why finding out how to get rid of them can be the only solution for many.
