The World's Highest Ski Lifts

February 26, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 195

How do you measure the world's highest ski lift? It might sound like a stupid question - surely it's the one that takes you highest? Actually it's not quite that simple.

There are various tricks that ski resorts use to try and claim that their ski lift is THIS HIGH! And therefore the most extreme or fun, when actually the reality's a bit different.

For example, some ski lifts will take you really really high up a slope and drop you at an impressively high point, but you might not actually be able to ski all the way down from that point. So it's a lift....but to call it a ski lift could be seen as misleading. This trick is used at a few resorts in the US and the Alps, where you have to ski down the vert a bit before getting another lift to take you to the starting point of the main descent. Some other ski lifts have cliffs which make them unskiable in one go and disrupt your descent. It's because mountains are such irregular, unpredictable things. Why can't they just be straight up and down like the pictures kids draw?

Then there's ones that say that they take you up to a certain height, but actually drop you off a bit before then and you have to walk up to the highest summit if you want to ski from there.

So taking these points into account, what is the highest ski lift? One that takes you up to the highest point itself, with no walking or other lift involved, and then lets you ski all the way down in one go? (If you can!)

Under these criteria, Chamonix in France wins. At an impressive 2755m vertical descent, this vert is as high as it gets at the moment. France and Switzerland dominate in terms of lift height - Verbier comes in second at 3509m. Building these bad boys involves some very specialist equipment. Helicopters are often used, along with telescopic cranes, heavy duty lifting equipment and some very sturdy ladders. But thank God they go to such effort so that we can reach these amazing heights and conquer the slopes. Man's quest to go higher and more extreme results in some brilliant experiences and the chance to see some truly stunning scenes from great heights, and that feeling that you're on top of the world as you whizz down a killer slope.
