Spring Ski and Snowboard Bargains

February 28, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 141

Booking a spring skiing or snowboarding trip is much like booking a similar trip at any point during the winter, except that at many resorts, there are extra bargains and discounts available. As the season winds down, and skiers begin to think of spring pursuits, like baseball or auto racing, resorts are eager to make offers that are hard to resist.

Keep in mind that not all ski areas offer spring skiing. You need to look for areas that sit at high altitudes, where temperatures stay colder later into the spring. North-facing slopes mean less sun exposure, so the snow stays in good condition. Finally, a deep winter snow pack means resorts can stay open well into the spring.

In North America, the most likely areas for spring skiing are in the West. Mammoth Mountain in the California Sierras is famous for its spring skiing season that routinely lasts until Memorial Day. Beginning in late April, lift tickets drop dramatically in price or the Slopeside Lift and Lodging Package offers one daily lift ticket to each guest on the reservation for stays from two to 14 nights.

Farther north at Mt. Hood Meadows Ski Resort in the Oregon Cascades, the skiing season lasts into May. For 2012, an unlimited spring season pass, available for $149, goes into effect on March 12 and is valid until the end of the season. Skiers staying at one of the resort's lodging partners in nearby Hood River can purchase daily tickets at the discounted price of $50.

Aspen/Snowmass in the Colorado Rockies offers great incentives for a family spring skiing break. Between March 1 and the season end on April 15, kids from 7 to 12 get free lodging, lift tickets, and equipment rental with a comparable adult purchase during a stay of four or more days. Aspen also offers a Spring Escape Mini-Vacation Package from April 8 through 15 that gives skiers three days of lodging, lifts, and equipment rentals for the price of two. Advance booking is required for all these packages.

On the East coast, several New England resorts typically stay open through April and even into May, thanks to snowmaking capabilities. At Sunday River in Maine, mid-week ski and stay packages drop in price as the season winds down and by mid-April weekend rates match those for week days. Ski and stay packages are in effect at Killington in Vermont until mid-April, and with some deals kids ages 7 to 12 ski free with an adult lift ticket purchase.
