Skiing With the Kids: Getting Out the Door

January 31, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 60

No question that skiing with kids requires a ton of gear. Getting out the door can seem like an impossible task but these tips will have you up and out the door in record time.

1. Wear long johns as pajamas. Save the hassle of getting dressed in the morning and start out the day in warm comfy clothes by having the kids wear their long johns to bed.

2. Load the car the night before with all skis, boards and poles. Do not store ski boots in the car overnight because they will never warm up.

3. Find a spot, preferably near a door, and lay out all ski gear in the order it needs to be put on in the morning. From socks to helmets, it all needs to be here and ready to go. This saves precious time looking for missing items in the morning. It also lets you know if something is missing that may need replacing before hitting the slopes in the morning.

4. Require a potty stop before gearing up. No exceptions and no excuses on this one! Nothing slows down a morning like a potty break after all the ski gear is on.

5. Dress all the kids together. If they get dressed individually, the first one done will get hot and sweaty in their gear, which is a terrible way to start the ski day. Instead, call out each step and have everyone complete it together. Ski instructors love kids that are self sufficient and this is a good way for kids to learn how to get themselves ready for a day on the slopes.

6. Head to the slopes fully dressed from helmet to ski boots. That way you know everyone has everything they need for the day. It also helps the ski school staff keep each child's gear together.

7. After everyone is safely buckled into the car, run through a simple checklist of the essentials: helmet, gloves/mittens, etc. just to make sure nothing fell off or accidentally got left behind. This is a great time to check that everyone has lift and/or lesson tickets.

8. Keep an emergency bag in the car, just in case. Keep a bag with extra gloves, extra goggles, and other essentials for the time when something is left behind or gets broken.

If you forget something, don't panic. Ski schools always have a robust lost and found and will generally let you borrow any missing items. Just remember to return them at the end of the day!

Being well prepared the night before will help your ski morning move smoothly from waking up to hitting the slopes.
