Planning Spring Ski Vacations

February 28, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 137

A spring ski vacation can be just as much fun as one in January and often offers some advantages over the winter variety. Crowds are usually thinner, and the weather is warmer. Resorts often run special deals or packages to attract skiers at season's end and lift ticket prices are lower. Just keep a few tips in mind while you plan your spring getaway to the slopes.

Check several ski resort websites to see when the season ends. This date may vary from one year to the next depending on the winter's snowfall and current weather conditions. The best and latest spring skiing tends to happen in the western U.S. where high altitudes and dense snow packs maintain good conditions well into May. Once you choose your ski area, look for spring packages that combine lodging and lifts into one low rate.

Plan on skiing in corn. If you have specialized equipment, bring it. If not, get your skis tuned and waxed for these conditions. At this time of year, even a fresh fall of powder will turn to corn in a day or two. Arrange your skiing day to follow the corn on the mountain; as the sun warms the lower slopes, you may need to move higher to avoid skiing in slush. Many mountains offer lessons dedicated to the best techniques for spring.

Adjust your usual skiing outerwear to keep you comfortable in warmer temperatures. You probably won't need the heavy parka that was just right in January. Bring layers to wear on the slopes, beginning with a moisture-wicking base and a warm middle layer. Add a lightweight, wind-and-water-resistant outer shell for windy or wet weather. This also has the added benefit of keeping you dry if you should fall into wet snow. Pants with gaiters or snaps to keep them snug at the bottom protect your legs from wet, chilling snow and slush.

In the spring, the sun is farther north, so it's more intense than in mid-winter. Apply a high SPF sunscreen before you start out on your skiing day and reapply it every couple of hours. Even on a cloudy day, your face can get a severe burn from the glare off the snow. If the weather is warm enough to ski in short sleeves, be sure to protect all your exposed skin. Wraparound sunglasses or goggles are equally important to prevent damage to your eyes.

Take frequent breaks for a drink of water. Spring's warmer on-slope temperatures can easily cause dehydration if you're not careful. You'll need far more fluid to counteract this effect.
