School Ski Trips to L'Alpe D'Huez

February 28, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 138

As an organiser of school ski trips you may find yourself in the position of having a significant number of destination opportunities available but only a relatively small number of those that meet your key requirements. Here are a few facts about one possible destination option, l'Alpe d'Huez.

The nature of school ski trips

If you are planning a skiing trip in charge of party of youngsters, it might be fairly safe to predict that a few things will be high on your list of priorities: the safety and security of the kids in your group; the availability of snow once you get there (little can be more challenging for those in charge of school ski trips than to find that there is little snow around); having relatively fast and easy access to lifts and the slopes, as younger skiers may not be inclined to be patient if asked to engage in marathon treks before they can actually start skiing; having access to other facilities to keep the group occupied when they are not actually on the slopes. In all of these areas, this particular resort scores highly.

L'Alpe d'Huez

L'Alpe d'Huez is a resort sitting high up in the French Alps. It was used for some of the Winter Olympics in the 1960s and was at one time noted as being somewhat exclusive. However, over recent decades it has realigned itself to focus more on family and broad-based skiing groups - including school ski trips.

With slopes going up to 3,300 metres there is a good snow record, and on the south facing slopes there are snow canons ready to top things up just in case the prevalent sunshine proves to be a little warmer than anticipated. As you might expect in a large and professionally run resort, there are a wide range of slopes designed to suit all levels of skiing - including some that would be considered demanding by even some of the world's greatest skiers.

The avant et après-ski

Although most people responsible for planning ski trips with younger participants, understandably, may wish to keep firm control of what goes on off the slopes, the reality is that it is beneficial to give your party an exposure to the full local culture of the area. In the centre of the town there are a number of restaurants, cafés and bars - though these are typically discreet and calm. There is also a sports centre with a swimming pool and other attractions and, in what may be particularly good news, a cinema. This tends to show French language films, so you may be able to encourage the children in your group to improve their language skills! The cinema will also show some English language films, though that is something that you will need to check the specifics of upon your arrival.
