Innsbruck - First Stop on Your Alpine Ski Holiday

February 22, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 126

If you think that the only perfect Alpine ski holiday involves the Swiss Alps and Geneva airport- you've obviously not yet discovered the charm of western Austria, particularly Innsbruck! The capital of the federal region of Tyrol, and the fifth largest city in Austria, this two-time host of the Winter Olympics is in fact, considered a wonderland for many aficionados of winter sports such as skiing, snowboarding and more.

From Innsbruck Airport, transfers are available to many great skiing resorts in and around the Tyrolean capital, each with their own advantages and charm- your choice really depends on the type of ski holiday you want!

About Innsbruck

Known as an Olympic city, Innsbruck's main attraction will, of course, remain the skiing and other winter sports available on the slopes of the great resorts such as Igls, Hungerburg, Tulfes and other. These are all easily accessible via Innsbruck airport transfers that take an hour or even a lot less.

From Innsbruck airport, transfers to the ski areas of the city are practically ready-to-go- in fact, you can get to a resort in as little as ten minutes. This is because the Tyrolean capital itself offers at least 500 kilometres of trails in the 25 resort villages surrounding the city proper. This includes at least eight major ski areas, offering varied terrain for skiers from different levels from beginners to those highly advanced athletes.

One mustn't miss the charms of the city, however. For true ski aficionados, the Olympic Museum offers an inspiration with its interesting display of sports memorabilia. In fact, many visitors actually pass here on their Innsbruck airport transfers - you can marvel at its famed golden roof as you drive by. Other popular landmarks include Schloss Ambras, home of Ferdinand II; Hofburg, the 14th century Imperial Palace; and Hofkirche, which holds the tombs of Ferdinand II and Maximillian, though the latter is empty. Of course, the real attraction will always be skiing, which you can do at Tulfes, Mutters, Igls, Hungerburg and other great slopes.

Ski Resorts In and Around Innsbruck

Depending on your interest and level of ski expertise, there are many resort areas in and around Innsbruck to choose from. They are all within around an hour via Innsbruck airport transfers - one reason this Winter Olympics city is popular among the broadest mix of skiers and other winter sports holiday-makers.

Mutters, for instance, around 10-20 minutes via Innsbruck airport transfers, has direct access to six different pistes, serviced by three ski lifts. With its family ski run, the Almboden nursery slope, three black runs, two red runs and one blue run, this highly popular resort offers skiing suitable for skiers of different levels.

Beginners, on the other hand will enjoy Igls - 20 minutes from the Innsbruck town proper and less than an hour via Innsbruck airport transfers. Palschertkofel, with its nursery slopes right next to the village centre is a popular choice for those learning to ski. If you already know how to ski, it might even inspire you to move your skiing to the next level!
