Most of the visitors will instantaneously feel a connection with your business should your website be able to present a good solution to their most pressing problem. With this connection, it will be a smooth transition from website visitor to potential business lead.

Solve Your Customers' Problems

You can find this out by visiting forums about topics connected with your field to see what people are posting about. For example, you might find people asking for advice with a particular problem they are having. If you stock a product that would solve the problem, you could include an information section on your website about how your product solves the problem that people are having. Providing this kind of useful information makes people who are searching for help with their problem more likely to land on your website and buy your product.

You can also register on relevant forums and give links to your website in response to posts. However, you need to do this very carefully or you will be labelled as a spammer. For example, if someone is asking where they can buy a particular product, giving them a link to a page on your site where you are selling the product is useful. However, going to a forum and posting links to your site in response to all the posts without paying attention to the discussions already going on is spamming. Spamming is considered rude and will not win you any customers.

Ask Your Customers What They Want

Usually, the best way to find out what someone wants is to ask them directly. You can set up your website to do this by including a guest book or contact page where visitors can leave comments about your site, services, or products. If you have a mailing list of customers, you could send out a survey to ask them which of your products or services they most value, and what else they would like you to offer them. Be careful when using email to conduct market research: people are very busy and don't like to be bombarded, so keep your surveys short and don't ask people to complete them too often. If you want to reward your customers for helping you to understand them better, you could offer discount codes to anyone who completes the survey.

Network with Your Customers

Networking is important for building a loyal customer base as well as for attracting new clients. The Internet makes networking easy for small business owners, as it gives you a way to connect with your target market. Create an account for your business on social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, and ask your customers to follow you on those sites so that you can keep them up to date with your latest developments. Follow them back so that you can see what they are talking about and therefore understand their needs better. You can link to your Facebook and Twitter accounts from your website to create a consistent online brand.
