You Can't Get a Concept Patent for Boiling Water and Yes It Has Many Applications and Uses

August 18, 2011 | Comments: 0 | Views: 92

Have you ever looked at an invention that was quite simple and said to yourself; I can't believe that person is making millions of dollars selling this product, because it is such a simple idea. You shouldn't be surprised because it is and always has been "necessity" which is the mother of invention. There are common problems that people have during their life experience, which must be solved, and when someone comes along and solves the problem no one should be flabbergasted about that.

Further, you don't necessarily need a patent to take a good idea which solves a serious problem and make money providing goods or services to those people who are challenged by the same. Face it, you can't get a concept patents for boiling water, but you can use boiling water for all sorts of things. You can use that knowledge of boiling water to help solve problems. For those that go to MIT, in the first year of engineering class, they ask the students to write down as many things as they can think of - in a very short amount of time - let's say 3 to 5 minutes of how many things you can use a pencil for.

It is amazing how many answers people can come up with, and those folks who have their mind unclouded, can spit out ideas from now until eternity, others are challenged because they've never actually turned their mind on in this way. Sometimes folks come up with a new invention, or they do a research project and learn something new. Unfortunately their minds have been trapped in linear thought while doing the research project, collecting the empirical data, and adhering to the scientific method to the point that they can't think outside the box, or rather tunnel they've created for themselves.

And then, along comes an entrepreneur who takes one look at their new innovation, and comes up with four or five ways to make money using that research. Why do you suppose this happens so early and often? Sometimes inventors and innovators get so caught up in what they are doing, and the application for their invention, as it solves a particular problem that they fall in love with not only their concept, but a particular application. They are unable to think beyond that application, and they miss all the uses for their new concept.

This is quite common, but I hope it doesn't happen to you. Indeed I hope you will please consider all this and think on it, and work just as hard thinking about the potential uses and applications as you do in the application process at the patent and trademark office.
