Innovation Topic - Training Your Mind to Put Complex Thoughts on the Back Burner and Be Creative

April 04, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 211

Is it possible to get your mind to come up with a new invention, innovation, concept, or original thought every single day for the rest of your life? Not only am I sure it's possible, but I've done it myself for five years straight, and not only one new idea or original thought, but two or more. It's not as difficult as you think, but it does take time to condition your mind to come up with such things. Now then let's talk about this for second shall we?

Have you ever marveled at some of the incredible advertisements that you listen to on the radio, or watch on TV? Who are all these creative geniuses sitting in rooms thinking of all these funny things? It takes a special type of person to do that, but there are folks who come up with new ideas for cartoons, and branding and marketing concepts every single day of their lives. There are thousands of people like this in the US alone.

Other nations can't believe that Americans are able to do this so easily, but the reality is that not all Americans can, most haven't ever tried to condition their minds to do this. Let me give you a couple of strategies that you can use. You can also use these to solve problems, not just come up with original ideas. Here is what I would like you to do.

Write down 5-6 items that are complex problems to solve, then go take a walk. Let your mind drift, and see what it comes up with. Some of the ideas that you come up with will be absolutely absurd, and later on you will think that they are utterly ridiculous, and wonder how on earth you could have thought of those things. It's the same sensation as waking up from a dream, writing something down, going back to sleep, and in the morning looking at what you wrote, and thinking that you must've been crazy.

No, you were crazy, that was your creative mind running over the part of your brain which had been turned off, the creative part of your mind was in control, perhaps the other part was busy defragging, while the creative part was jumping around going through its massive collection of all of your observations, experiences, education, memories, and thoughts. Nevertheless it's all good, and I would submit to you that you can train your mind to run right side and left side thinking strategies simultaneously for problem solving and brainstorming.

Another strategy is to write down and memorize 5-6 items, and study all you can find online about those items right before you go to bed when you are getting extremely tired, as this is when your creative side will be more in control. One thing I like to do is whenever I am driving home from anywhere, I pick a point about two or 3 miles from my home and tell myself that by the time I get home I will have thought of an original idea, and if I fail to I am not allowed to go home, therefore putting a little pressure on myself.

You may think that it's hard to work under pressure, but actually as you get better at trying these strategies, you will see that it actually forces you to think creatively in a 4 to 5 minute drill. So go ahead and try this for yourself, and until then I hope you will please consider all this and think on it.
