The Benefits of Cognitive Hypnotherapy

May 29, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 151

Cognitive Hypnosis is often related to some form of stage performance wherein a host places an audience member under a trance to manipulate him into doing some ridiculous actions. But contrary to this outdated idea, cognitive hypnosis (also known as cognitive hypnotherapy) is recognized as an effective and evidence based treatment to help people reach their goals.

What Makes Cognitive Hypnosis Different?

It is different from traditional hypnosis as it aim is to identify the unique mind-pattern programme of the problem and to guide the person's unconscious towards the solution. It is tailored to the individual, which means the changes are more likely to be accepted by the unconscious mind, making them ongoing and permanent.

Soothing Effects

It has been used for years as a way of soothing patients and calming their nerves. It uses behavioral therapy and combines it with hypnosis to tap into a person's thoughts and consciousness. Through this hypnosis, patients who are suffering from high levels of stress, anxiety, and even trauma can be resolved and guided and educated how to learn how to relax so they can tap into their own inherent abilities to be calm.

This is a popular treatment for clients with extreme fears and phobias. In some cases, clients' fears are so deep and engrained into their consciousness that regular therapy fails to have any effect. With cognitive hypnosis, therapists are able to access their inner thoughts' and go to the root cause of the problem where the mind learned how to do this behavior. The principle of 'all behavior has a purpose' is used so the therapist focuses on the unique context, structure and process that the client has to identify the purpose behind the behavior. Even a limiting fear based behavior has a positive intention (safety / protection) and the goal is to unlearn and relearn a new way to still fulfill the intention and purpose of safety and protection without the need for the limiting behavior. In this sense, cognitive hypnosis retrains the mind creating a new learned behavior that actually which empowers the client instead of limiting them.

Sports Performance

This approach is highly effective and has been used in several fields including sports performance. Sometimes, in the world of sports, an athlete will suddenly perform below his abilities for no apparent reason. One of the best alternative treatments therapists use today is cognitive hypnosis. In some cases, cognitive hypnosis helps an athlete regain some form of focus and discard the distraction that caused the abrupt drop in performance.

It is also a very effective means of helping people get over their addictions. Although most addictions are tied with chemical dependence of a certain drug or substance, there are also cases wherein clients are also psychologically addicted. In such cases, cognitive hypnotherapists can access that person's subconscious and treat the addiction with therapeutic hypnosis.

Weight Loss

Hypnosis is perhaps best known as an alternative treatment for people who are looking to lose weight. In some cases wherein people are compelled by some unknown force to keep eating, hypnosis is a great way to tap into that person's subconscious are treat the underlying compulsion to eat. In recent times, advances in the field of psychoanalysis and behavioral therapy have allowed hypnotherapists to help clients with weight loss problems.
