Hypnosis and Meditation

The difference between self-hypnosis and meditation. It's a simple question on the surface, but there are so many different forms and techniques in both categories that it's tough to make more than a general comparison. Nonetheless, while the boundary between self- hypnosis and meditation might not be clearly delineated, I think it is possible to make a distinction.

Hypnotherapy is usually aimed at a more specific therapeutic outcome. This might be weight loss, quitting smoking, removing phobias etc. At the beginning of a hypnotherapy session, the hypnotherapist may employ some meditation-like techniques in order to quiet the conscious part of the mind. Once the chattering conscious mind is still, they are then more able to give the subconscious part of the mind pre agreed therapeutic suggestions. So a specific therapeutic aim is sought after with the use of suggestion. Hypnotherapy is aimed at a specific therapeutic outcome. Traditional Meditation is less structured, in that clearing the conscious mind allows thoughts or feelings to surface, while trying not to attach to the emotion of them. Meditation is commonly described as the absence of all thought. Practitioners aim to have a still mind, free from conscious chatter. If any conscious thoughts in words enter your mind during meditation, you must find a way of getting rid of them. Often repeating mantras or focusing on something such as the breathing or an object can help with this. Meditation is being at peace with who you are and what you do. Living up to other people's expectations or even our own expectations of ourselves causes stress which in can cause irritability, high blood pressure, lack of concentration, sleeplessness, loss of appetite, to name but a few. Meditation can help free your mind of all these negative thoughts and feelings and allow you experience an inner peace. Practitioners aim to have a still mind, free from conscious thought. If any conscious thoughts in words enter your mind, you must find a way of making them disappear. Often repeating mantras or focusing on something such as the breathing or images can help with this.

Both a hypnosis session and a meditation session might lead you to a relaxing guided visualization on a calming tranquil beach, but a hypnosis session will then use this state of mind to suggest therapeutic change to the subconscious mind. Someone meditating will receive their benefit purely from the stillness of mind and the relaxation they experience. This stillness of mind can lead to enlightenment and self-improvement by improving the mind in a more general way.

Both hypnosis and meditation can produce states of deep relaxation, both can claim a wide range of similar health benefits, but the routes to what might be a similar destination are a bit different. In meditation, the conscious awareness of the practitioner is called into play.
